[Termes IGN] requête (informatique)Résumé : (auteur) Volunteered geographic information (VGI) plays an increasing role in current geodata provision. At the same time, due to its lack of structure, it is hard to use as meaningful input in software applications. In this chapter, we embark upon the unstructured character of VGI and on ways to enrich the structure in order to make it suitable for information retrieval. We describe the characteristics of semantic enrichment and explain how folksonomies and ontologies play a role. We believe that they represent different levels of formality in a semantic reference space and determine the richness of the information retrieval. [Termes IGN] web sémantiqueRésumé : (auteur) Geoportals provide integrated access to geospatial resources, and enable both authorities and the general public to contribute and share data and services. An essential goal of geoportals is to facilitate the discovery of the available resources. Such a process relies heavily on the quality of metadata. While multiple metadata standards have been established, data contributers may adopt different standards when sharing their data via the same geoportal. This is especially the case for user-generated content where various terms and topics can be introduced to describe similar datasets. While this heterogeneity provides a wealth of perspectives, it also complicates resource discovery. With the fast development of the Semantic Web technologies, there is a rise of Linked-Data-driven portals. Although these novel portals open up new ways to organize metadata and retrieve resources, they lack effective semantic search methods. This article addresses the two challenges discussed above, namely the topic heterogeneity brought by multiple metadata standards and the lack of established semantic search in Linked-Data-driven geoportals. To harmonize the metadata topics, we employ a natural language processing method, namely Labeled Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LLDA), and train it using standardized metadata from Data.gov. With respect to semantic search, we construct thematic and geographic matching features from the textual metadata descriptions, and train a regression model via a human participants experiment. We evaluate our methods by examining their performances in addressing the two issues. Finally, we implement a semantics-enabled and Linked-Data-driven prototypical geoportal using a sample dataset from Esri's ArcGIS Online. [Termes IGN] visualisation de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) This article reports on a study performed to understand the geographic and linguistic coverage of web resources, focusing on the example of tourism-related themes in Switzerland. Search engine queries of web documents were used to gather counts for phrases in four different languages. The study focused on selected populated places and tourist attractions in Switzerland from three gazetteer datasets: topographic gazetteer data from the Swiss national mapping agency (SwissTopo); POI data from a commercial data provider (Tele Atlas) and user generated geographic content (geonames.org). The web counts illustrate the geographic extent and trends of web coverage of tourism for different languages. Results show that coverage for local languages, i.e. German, French and Italian, is more strongly related to the region of the spoken language. Correlation of the web counts to typical tourism indicators, e.g. population and number of hotel nights rented per year, are also computed and compared. [Termes IGN] web des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) This article introduces a design process, called W-RayS, to describe Deep Web geographic data and to publish the descriptions both on the Web of Data and on the Surface Web. The article also outlines a toolkit that supports the process and discusses an experiment in which the toolkit was used to publish data stored in a large map server. Briefly, to describe geographic data in vector format, the designer should first specify views over the underlying geographic database that capture the basic characteristics of the geographic objects and their topological relationships represented in the vector data. The same idea is applied to raster data, but using a gazetteer or any other geographic database that covers the same area as the raster data. Then, the designer should map the view definitions to an RDF schema, following the Linked Data principles. The descriptions of the geographic data are therefore formalized as sets of RDF triples synthesized from the conventional data. To publish geographic data descriptions on the Web of Data, the designer may decide to materialize the RDF triples and store them in a repository or create a SPARQL endpoint to access the triples on demand. To publish geographic data descriptions on the Surface Web, W-RayS offers the designer tools to transform the RDF triples to natural language sentences, organized as static Web pages with embedded RDFa. The inclusion of RDFa preserves the structure of the data and allows more specific queries, processed by engines that analyze Web pages with RDFa.
