[Termes IGN] traitement automatique de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we present the GéOnto project, aiming in particular to build an ontology of topographic concepts. This ontology is made by enrichment of a first taxonomy developed beforehand, through the analysis of two types of textual documents: technical database specifications and description of journeys. This work relies on natural language processing and ontology alignment techniques, as well as external knowledge resources such as dictionaries and gazetteers. [Termes IGN] traitement automatique de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Assessing how much two geographic databases reflect the same point of view is a key issue for data integration. We argue that this task requires developing ontologies revealing the point of view of each piece of information, and neglecting the technical choices behind the organization of information in data schemas. These ontologies need then to be aligned and globally compared. In this paper, we describe techniques allowing doing that in the fields of ontology alignment and natural language processing. We illustrate those points through results from experiments made on actual data with a semi-automated analysis of their specifications. [Termes IGN] toponymeRésumé : (Auteur) Natural language processing (NLP) techniques, such as toponym detection and resolution, are an integral part of most geographic information retrieval (GIR) architectures. Without these components, synonym detection, ambiguity resolution and accurate toponym expansion would not be possible. However, there are many important factors affecting the success of an NLP approach to GIR, including toponym detection errors, toponym resolution errors and query overloading. The aim of this paper is to determine how severe these errors are in state-of-the-art systems, and to what extent they affect GIR performance. We show that a careful choice of weighting schemes in the IR engine can minimize the negative impact of these errors on GIR accuracy. We provide empirical evidence from the GeoCLEF 2005 and 2006 datasets to support our observations.
