[Termes IGN] TaïwanRésumé : (auteur) Conducting field research in Taiwan can be challenging because of the abundance of steep slopes. This study aimed to establish an automatic interpretation procedure applicable to exploring images of large-scale slope land taken using UAVs. The proposed method was compared with traditional field surveying and manual image interpretation techniques to determine the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed procedure in terms of efficiency. The object-based image analysis (OBIA) and texture features were first combined and the random forest (RF) classifier was then employed to interpret crop types. This study selected three sites of slope land and plains for experimentation. The obtained results indicated that the overall accuracy of the proposed classification method exceeded 91%, and the Kappa value was approximately 0.9 for all sites. In addition, interpretation of the proposed method was more efficient than that of the two traditional methods. [Termes IGN] Java (île de)Résumé : (auteur) This article discusses an experiment on the estimation of rubber tree biomass using L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), to support recent efforts to include trees outside forest in global biomass and carbon accounting. We noted that date of acquisition is important, but certainly the selection of allometric equation serving as the reference data was paramount. Similarly, choosing a proper form of fully polarimetric data was instrumental, although this requires validation in different environmental settings. As expected, modern data mining approaches consistently delivered high accuracy. Extreme learning machine yielded the best estimate in terms of R2 (0.98) and RMSE (1.88 Mg/ha); nonetheless, it also delivered a slight negative estimation. In this case, we found that a variant of random forest produced an outcome without any negative estimation. This research suggests that estimated biomass or carbon information from rubber plantations would be an invaluable candidate for the improvement of global biomass data. [Termes IGN] précision géométrique (imagerie)Résumé : (auteur) Generation of precise digital elevation models (DEMs) from stereo satellite images by using rational polynomial coefficients (RPCs) usually needs several ground control points (GCPs). This is mainly due to RPCs biases. However, since GCPs collection is a time consuming and expensive process, global DEMs (GDEMs), as the most inexpensive geospatial information, can be used to improve stereo satellite imagery-based DEMs (IB-DEMs). In this study, a 2.5 D mutual information based DEM matching, between a GDEM and an IB-DEM, was introduced for bias correction of satellite stereo images. Three well-known 30-meter GDEMs, namely, SRTM, ASTER, and AW3D30, were used and compared to assess the efficiency of this approach. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated by processing the stereo images acquired by CARTOSAT-1 satellite from two regions with flat, hilly, and mountainous topography. It was ensured that the number of points in each TIN was approximately equal to the number calculated by Töpfer’s formula, and that the vertical error of each TIN was less than the error calculated by Koppe’s formula. According to the results, (1) both methods are quality prioritized, (2) IPE is more sensitive to local surface changes, (3) important triangle edges determined by IPE make a significant contribution to the TIN, (4) some of the points selected by IPE are more important points than that of VIP, and (5) IPE-based TINs are more structural fidelity than VIP-based TINs. [Termes IGN] ZimbabweRésumé : (auteur) Tsetse flies transmit trypanosomes that cause Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT) in humans and African Animal Trypanosomiasis (AAT) in animals. Understanding historical trends in the spatial distribution of tsetse fly habitat is necessary for planning vector control measures. The objectives of this study were (i) to test for evidence of any trends in suitable tsetse fly habitat and (ii) to test whether there is an association between trypanosomiasis detected from livestock sampled in dip tanks and local tsetse habitat in the project area. Results indicate a significant decreasing trend in the amount of suitable habitat. There is no significant correlation between trypanosomiasis prevalence rates in cattle and distance from patches of suitable tsetse habitat. The observed low trypanosomiasis prevalence and the lack of dependence on suitable tsetse fly habitat can be explained by the observed decreases in suitable tsetse habitat, which themselves are due to expansion of settlement and agriculture in North Western Zimbabwe.
