[Termes IGN] productivitéRésumé : (auteur) The objective of the study was to provide a stand-scale assessment of long-term productivity changes in even-aged stands and to depict their chronology over the twentieth century. We focused on dominant height growth as a proxy for productivity, reconstructed from stem analyses in temporary plots. Height increments from two generations of stands were compared. Stands were associated in pairs to ensure accurate control of intrinsic site fertility conditions. The historical evolution of the growth rate was estimated using a statistical modeling approach based on a mixed-effects model, with a control of both site and developmental stage effects. We placed emphasis on a model formulation that leads to a meaningful interpretation of growth rate evolution. We applied the methodology to a sample of 14 stand pairs and 84 stem analyses of Common Beech in northeastern France. An accelerated increase in growth rate was identified, reaching +50% over the twentieth century. The trend also displayed short-term growth anomalies. [Vedettes matières IGN] Economie forestièreRésumé : (Auteur) Accurate estimation of stem volume makes it possible to estimate the monetary value of one of the many commodities and services that forests provide to society, i.e. timber. In the present study a compatible volume system for Scots pine in the major mountain ranges of Spain (the Pyrenees, Southern Iberian Range, Northern Iberian Range, Soria and Burgos Mountains, Central Range and Galician Mountains) was developed with data from 2682 destructively sampled trees. Several well-known taper functions were evaluated. A second-order continuous-time autoregressive error structure was used to correct the inherent autocorrelation in the hierarchical data, allowing the model to be applied to irregularly spaced and unbalanced data. The compatible segmented model of Fang et al. (2000) best described the experimental data. It is therefore recommended for estimating diameter at a specific height, height to a specific diameter, merchantable volume, and total volume for the six mountain ranges analyzed.
• The non-linear extra sum of squares method indicated differences in mountain range-specific taper functions. A different taper function should therefore be used for each mountain range in Spain.

[Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (Auteur) Radial and height growth chronologies from 150-year-old and 50-year old Scots pine stands, both located near to the northern timberline in Laanila, Finland (68° 30′ N, 27° 28′ E), were cross-correlated with each other and with mean temperatures of various temperature periods defined as months, days or growing-degree-days. The height-growth chronology correlates significantly with radial growth at lags 1 and 2, and radial growth with height growth at lag 2 when the effect of temperature is omitted. On average, low and high growth years represent cool and warm average growing seasons. The summer temperatures (June, July and August) affect most on growth, but height and radial growth do have a different set of effective temperature periods. Furthermore, July temperature variation affects stronger height than radial growth. Those years with low height/radial-growth ratio, i.e. relatively higher current year’s radial than next year’s height growth, do have lower growth and cooler-than-average July temperature whereas those years with high height/radial-growth ratio do have clearly warmer mid-summer temperatures.
