Nevertheless, their physical and biogeochemical processes have been long influenced by anthropogenic pressures. A complete and regular monitoring of reservoir water quality in the context of current climate change, eutrophication and higher water demand, has become crucial for optimal management strategies. Recent progress in the satellite remote sensing field made it possible to enhance data acquisition on a synoptic scale and to perform retrospective studies. Satellite data can complement measurements however over a limited depth of the water column. In addition, three-dimensional (3D) numerical models which integrate physical, chemical and biological processes can fill temporal gaps and extend the information into the vertical domain. In this context, this PhD thesis focuses on the combined use of techniques and data derived from field monitoring, satellite remote sensing and 3D modeling. The overreaching objective of this work is to propose a combined approach for surveying the water quality of medium-sized reservoirs (~ 14 km2).The study site is Karaoun Reservoir, Lebanon (semi-arid climate, surface 12 km2, capacity 110 hm3). It mainly serves for hydropower however with possibly a future drinking water production. It is eutrophic and has been experiencing regular events of toxic cyanobacterial blooms. The following methodological approach was adopted:i) In situ measurements were regularly collected from spring to fall for the calibration and the validation of remote sensing algorithms and of the model.ii) In order to calibrate and validate remote sensing algorithms, Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 imagery were atmospherically corrected using a single-channel algorithm and the 6SV code respectively.a. Four algorithms from literature for deriving surface temperature were validated using Landsat 8 thermal data.b. A previously calibrated and validated Sentinel-2 algorithm was applied to retrieve chlorophyll-a concentrations.c. An empirical algorithm was calibrated and validated in order to retrieve transparency from Sentinel-2 data.iii) In order to conduct a retrospective analysis of surface temperature, the validated single channel algorithm was applied to a series of Landsat images from 1984 to 2018.iv) In order to reproduce the hydrodynamics and ecological processes, including cyanobacterial biomass in space and time, the Delft3D model was configured, calibrated and validated for summer and fall. The spatial distribution of surface temperature and chlorophyll-a concentrations from the satellite and the model were investigated. The results of this study revealed that, among the four tested algorithms, the single channel algorithm dependent on atmospheric water vapor content and lake water emissivity yielded the best estimations of surface temperature. Using this validated algorithm, the retrospective analysis of surface temperature did not reveal any warming trend over the 1984-2018 period at the study site. Compared to in situ profiles, the Delft3D model represented well the evolution of the water level fluctuations, and the time and vertical distribution of temperature and phytoplankton biomass. Satellite data and model simulations showed minor spatial heterogeneities of surface temperature ( Note de contenu : General introduction

[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) A novel methodological framework is presented for climate-sensitive modeling of annual radial stem increments using tree-ring width time series. The approach is based on a hierarchical Bayes model together with a distributed time lag model that take into account the effects of a series of monthly temperature and precipitation values, as well as their interactions. By using a set of random walk priors, the hierarchical Bayes model allows both the detrending of the individual time series and the regression modeling to be performed simultaneously in a single model step. The approach was applied to comprehensive tree-ring width data from Austria collected on sample plots arranged in triplets representing different mixture types. Bayesian predictions revealed that European larch (Larix decidua Mill.), Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst.), and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) show positive climate-related growth trends throughout higher elevation sites in Tyrol, and these trends remain unchanged under a mixed-stand scenario. At the lower Austrian sites, Norway spruce was found to show a severely negative growth trend under both the pure- and mixed-stand scenario. The increment rates of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) were found to have a negative climate-related trend in pure stands, and the trend diminished through an admixture of spruce or larch. The trends of European larch and sessile oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.) showed stationary behavior, irrespective of the mixture scenario. Scots pine data showed a positive trend at the lower elevation sites under both the pure- and mixed-stand scenario. These findings indicate that species mixing does not lower the climate-related increment fluctuations of beech, oak, pine, and spruce at lower elevation sites. [Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) Background and Objectives: Continuous cover forestry is of increasing importance, but operational forest growth models are still lacking. The debate is especially open if more complex spatial approaches would provide a worthwhile increase in accuracy. Our objective was to compare a nonspatial versus a spatial approach for individual Norway spruce tree growth models under single-tree selection cutting.
Materials and Methods: We calibrated nonlinear mixed models using data from a long-term experiment in Finland (20 stands with 3538 individual trees for 10,238 growth measurements). We compared the use of nonspatial versus spatial predictors to describe the competitive pressure and its release after cutting. The models were compared in terms of Akaike Information Criteria (AIC), root mean square error (RMSE), and mean absolute bias (MAB), both with the training data and after cross-validation with a leave-one-out method at stand level.
Results: Even though the spatial model had a lower AIC than the nonspatial model, RMSE and MAB of the two models were similar. Both models tended to underpredict growth for the highest observed values when the tree-level random effects were not used. After cross-validation, the aggregated predictions at stand level well represented the observations in both models. For most of the predictors, the use of values based on trees’ height rather than trees’ diameter improved the fit. After single-tree selection cutting, trees had a growth boost both in the first and second five-year period after cutting, however, with different predicted intensity in the two models.
Conclusions: Under the research framework here considered, the spatial modeling approach was not more accurate than the nonspatial one. Regarding the single-tree selection cutting, an intervention regime spaced no more than 15 years apart seems necessary to sustain the individual tree growth. However, the model’s fixed effect parts were not able to capture the high growth of the few fastest-growing trees, and a proper estimation of site potential is needed for uneven-aged stands.

[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Key message: In recent decades, there has been a decline in growth in a rear-edge broadleaf forest of Fagus sylvatica , Quercus petraea , and Quercus pyrenaica . Although temperatures have been rising due to climate change, the observed decline in growth was mainly attributed to increased density and competition between trees since the cessation of traditional uses such as logging in the 1960s.
Context: In recent decades, two major factors have influenced tree growth in many forests: climate warming, which is associated with aridification and negative growth trends in many Mediterranean forests, and abandonment of forest management, resulting from forest policy in conjunction with rural depopulation in Europe, often leading to an increase in competition and a decrease in growth.
Aims: Here, we study the growth trends in a mixed forest of Fagus sylvatica, Quercus petraea, and Quercus pyrenaica, where the abandonment of traditional uses in the 1960s has been followed by an increase in tree density. In this forest, both F. sylvatica and Q. petraea reach their south-westernmost limits of distribution.
Methods: Using dendrochronological methods and growth modeling, we assess the importance of climate warming on the shifts in competitive growth advantage of these three coexisting tree species and the relative importance of climate and competition on growth trends.
Results: Q. petraea and especially F. sylvatica showed a favorable evolution of their competitive capacity, despite the increase in temperatures that has occurred in the area in recent decades. F. sylvatica presented the lowest sensitivity to climate.
Conclusion: Under the current climate and forest structure conditions, competition is the most limiting factor on tree growth for the two oak species.Numéro de notice : A2020-661 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1007/s13595-020-01004-5 Date de publication en ligne : 01/10/2020 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1007/s13595-020-01004-5 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=96135

[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Key message: Climate change will induce a change in fire frequency in Mediterranean region and that could impact fire-adapted plant species. We showed that fire-related traits of some pine species are strongly related to other factors than fire but the recent fire history has nonetheless an impact on the variation of key traits for different fire adaptive strategies.
Context: In fire-prone Mediterranean areas, climate change is expected to exacerbate the fire pressure on ecosystems, altering the current fire regime and threatening species if they cannot acclimate.
Aims: Studying intraspecific variations of some fire-related traits in relation to variation in recent fire activity is thus an important step to better understand if this acclimation is possible.
Methods: We measured structural (bark thickness, shoot bulk density, self-pruning, leaf surface to volume ratio) and functional (serotiny level for Pinus halepensis only) traits in two pines species (Pinus halepensis and Pinus sylvestris) commonly found in southeastern France and that present different fire-adaptive strategies (resilience vs resistance, respectively). Populations were sampled according to different fire frequency modalities (0 vs 1 to 2 fires) along a geographical gradient, measuring numerous environmental and plant characteristics to be used cofactors in the analyses.
Results: As expected, trait variation was strongly linked to environmental and tree characteristics as well as to ontogeny overriding the effect of fire modalities, even though using integrative models with random effect. However, fire modalities had an impact on the variance of some key fire-related traits of Pinus halepensis.
Conclusion: This study will help to anticipate the future response of these Mediterranean pine species and further underlines the importance of investigating chemical traits, flammability, and genetic variation of highly heritable traits, such as serotiny.Numéro de notice : A2020-722 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1007/s13595-020-01016-1 Date de publication en ligne : 16/11/2020 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1007/s13595-020-01016-1 Format de la ressource électronique : url article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=96320
