[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) The contribution of forests to carbon storage and biodiversity conservation highlights the need for accurate forest height and biomass mapping and monitoring. In France, forests are managed mainly by private owners and divided into small stands, requiring 10 to 50 m spatial resolution data to be correctly separated. Further, 35 % of the French forest territory is covered by mountains and Mediterranean forests which are managed very extensively. In this work, we used a deep-learning model based on multi-stream remote sensing measurements (NASA’s GEDI LiDAR mission and ESA’s Copernicus Sentinel 1 & 2 satellites) to create a 10 m resolution canopy height map of France for 2020 (FORMS-H). In a second step, with allometric equations fitted to the French National Forest Inventory (NFI) plot data, we created a 30 m resolution above-ground biomass density (AGBD) map (Mg ha-1) of France (FORMS-B). Extensive validation was conducted. First, independent datasets from Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) and NFI data from thousands of plots reveal a mean absolute error (MAE) of 2.94 m for FORMS-H, which outperforms existing canopy height models. Second, FORMS-B was validated using two independent forest inventory datasets from the Renecofor permanent forest plot network and from the GLORIE forest inventory with MAE of 59.6 Mg ha-1 and 19.6 Mg.ha-1 respectively, providing greater performance than other AGBD products sampled over France. These results highlight the importance of coupling remote sensing technologies with recent advances in computer science to bring material insights to climate-efficient forest management policies. Additionally, our approach is based on open-access data having global coverage and a high spatial and temporal resolution, making the maps reproducible and easily scalable. [Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (auteur) One of the main challenges of using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in forest data acquisition is the implementation of Ground Control Points (GCPs) as a mandatory step, which is sometimes impossible for inaccessible areas or within canopy closures. This study aimed to test the accuracy of a UAV-mounted GNSS RTK (real-time kinematic) system for calculating tree height and crown height without any GCPs. The study was conducted on a Cupressus arizonica (Greene., Arizona cypress) plantation on the Razi University Campus in Kermanshah, Iran. Arizona cypress is commonly planted as an ornamental tree. As it can tolerate harsh conditions, this species is highly appropriate for afforestation and reforestation projects. A total of 107 trees were subjected to field-measured dendrometric measurements (height and crown diameter). UAV data acquisition was performed at three altitudes of 25, 50, and 100 m using a local network RTK system (NRTK). The crown height model (CHM), derived from a digital surface model (DSM), was used to estimate tree height, and an inverse watershed segmentation (IWS) algorithm was used to estimate crown diameter. The results indicated that the means of tree height obtained from field measurements and UAV estimation were not significantly different, except for the mean values calculated at 100 m flight altitude. Additionally, the means of crown diameter reported from field measurements and UAV estimation at all flight altitudes were not statistically different. [Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) Collecting field data in silvicultural experiments can be challenging and time-consuming. Alternatively, unmanned aerial vehicles using laser scanners (UAV-lidar) can be used for cost-effective data collection in forest stands. This work aims to assess the capability of UAV-lidar to estimate biophysical forest attributes in silvicultural experiments. The showcase experiment refers to the IMPAC II (Intensive Management Practices Assessment Center II), a long-term project of 24 plots aiming to assess the effects of fertilization and weed control on forest growth and nutrient cycling in past and ongoing silvicultural treatments in a second rotation of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantation at age 12 years. Treatment performances were assessed based on four biometric attributes related to forest productivity: Growing stock biomass (Mg ha−1), stem volume (m3 ha−1), dominant height (m), and leaf area index (LAI, m2 m−2). We used the area-based approach (ABA) and multiple linear models to characterize these forest attributes in the different silvicultural treatments and use their predictions to run the experiment analysis. Two groups of ALS-derived metrics were tested in the modeling, traditional metrics and a novel group of metrics based on plant area density (PAD) distribution. Models using PAD-based metrics increased the correlation between observed and predicted values (R2) from 0.27–0.40 to 0.50–0.85 when compared to the same models using traditional metrics, while the relative root mean square errors (RMSE%) of the predictions were reduced from 6–18% to 4–12%. Experiment analysis using UAV-lidar data and PAD-based model predictors led to the same results as those using field observations: i) fertilization was the most effective treatment for enhancing stand attributes, especially in terms of biomass, stem volume, and LAI; ii) weed control alone provided marginal improvements in the stands; iii) actively retreating stands in both first and second rotation led to increased growth when compared to the carryover effects. UAV-lidar using PAD-based metrics was effective in characterizing enhanced silvicultural treatments and might benefit studies involving understory assessment. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Forest map products are widely used and have taken benefit from progresses in the multisource forest inventory approaches, which are meant to improve the precision of forest inventory estimates at high spatial resolution. However, estimating errors of pixel-wise predictions remains difficult, and reconciling statistical outcomes with map products is still an open and important question. We address this problem using an original approach relying on a model-based inference framework and k-nearest neighbours (k-NN) models to produce pixel-wise estimations and related quality assessment. Our approach takes advantage of the resampling properties of a model-based estimator and combines it with geometrical convex-hull models to measure respectively the precision and accuracy of pixel predictions. A measure of pixel reliability was obtained by combining precision and accuracy. The study was carried out over a 7,694 km2 area dominated by structurally complex broadleaved forests in centre of France. The targeted forest attributes were growing stock volume, basal area and growing stock volume increment. A total of 819 national forest inventory plots were combined with auxiliary data extracted from a forest map, Landsat 8 images, and 3D point clouds from both airborne laser scanning and digital aerial photogrammetry. k-NN models were built independently for both 3D data sources. Both selected models included 5 auxiliary variables, and were generated using 5 neighbours, and most similar neighbours distance measure. The models showed relative root mean square error ranging from 35.7% (basal area, digital aerial photogrammetry) in calibration to 63.4% (growing stock volume increment, airborne laser scanning) in the validation set. At pixel level, we found that a minimum of 86.4% of the predictions were of high precision as their bootstrapped coefficient of variation fall below calibration’s relative root mean square error. The amount of extrapolation varied from 4.3% (digital aerial photogrammetry) to 6.3% (airborne laser scanning). A relationship was found between extrapolation and k-NN distance, opening new opportunities to correct extrapolation errors. At the population level, airborne laser scanning and digital aerial photogrammetry performed similarly, offering the possibility to use digital aerial photogrammetry for monitoring purposes. The proposed method provided consistent estimates of forest attributes and maps, and also provided spatially explicit information about pixel predictions in terms of precision, accuracy and reliability. The method therefore produced high resolution outputs, significant for either decision making or forest management purposes. [Termes IGN] volume en boisRésumé : (auteur) Tree growth is a physio-ecological phenomena of high interest among researchers across disciplines. Observing changes in tree characteristics has conventionally required either repeated measurements of the characteristics of living trees, retrospective measurements of destructively sampled trees, or modelling. The use of close-range sensing techniques such as terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) has enabled non-destructive approaches to reconstruct the three-dimensional (3D) structure of trees and tree communities in space and time. This study aims at improving the understanding of tree allometry in general and interactions between tree growth and its neighbourhood in particular by using two-date point clouds. We investigated how variation in the increments in basal area at the breast height (Δg1.3), basal area at height corresponding to 60% of tree height (Δg06h), and volume of the stem section below 50% of tree height (Δv05h) can be explained with TLS point cloud-based attributes characterizing the spatiotemporal structure of a tree crown and crown neighbourhood, entailing the competitive status of a tree. The analyses were based on 218 trees on 16 sample plots whose 3D characteristics were obtained at the beginning (2014, T1) and at the end of the monitoring period (2019, T2) from multi-scan TLS point clouds using automatic point cloud processing methods. The results of this study showed that, within certain tree communities, strong relationships (|r| > 0.8) were observed between increments in the stem dimensions and the attributes characterizing crown structure and competition. Most often, attributes characterizing the competitive status of a tree, and the crown structure at T1, were the most important attributes to explain variation in the increments of stem dimensions. Linear mixed-effect modelling showed that single attributes could explain up to 35–60% of the observed variation in Δg1.3, Δg06h and Δv05h, depending on the tree species. This tree-level evidence of the allometric relationship between stem growth and crown dynamics can further be used to justify landscape-level analyses based on airborne remote sensing technologies to monitor stem growth through the structure and development of crown structure. This study contributes to the existing knowledge by showing that laser-based close-range sensing is a feasible technology to provide 3D characterization of stem and crown structure, enabling one to quantify structural changes and the competitive status of trees for improved understanding of the underlying growth processes.
