[Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (auteur) The forest tree height and aboveground biomass (AGB) are important indicators for monitoring changes and trends in forest carbon storage and terrestrial carbon fluxes. Accurate large-scale wall-to-wall mapping of the forest tree height and AGB remain challenging due to the limited data availability for extraction tree height and the data signal saturation problem in AGB estimation. In this study, we explored the potential of forest tree height mapping using stereo imageries, and analyzed whether accounting for such information, in addition to optical sensor data, could improve the performance of AGB estimations of coniferous forests in a case study in North China. First, a spatially continuous tree height product was obtained using Ziyuan-3 satellite (ZY-3) stereo images combined with a digital elevation model (DEM) obtained from Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) data. Second, two AGB estimation models were established by combining the forest tree height with vegetation index, spectral, biophysical (from Sentinel-2 images), and topographic variables. A random forest algorithm was utilized to evaluate the effect of including the tree height variable in the AGB estimation. The results showed that the tree height estimation using the nadir and forward views of the ZY-3 stereo images was more accurate than that based on the nadir and backward views from the same images. The AGB estimation model incorporating the tree height variable with a coefficient of determination value of 0.7789, a root mean square error (RMSE) value of 29.815 Mg/ha and a relative RMSE of 23.42% was more robust and effective, thereby demonstrating that the tree height variable can be used to alleviate the data signal saturation issue successfully. The proposed approach can provide new insight into forest tree height mapping and AGB products obtained from satellite stereo images and freely accessible Sentinel-2 multispectral images. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) In a changing climate, forest managers need to select productive and climate-change-resilient tree species and provenances. Therefore, assessing the growth response of provenances growing in field trials to climate provides useful information for identifying the more appropriate provenance or variety. To determine the genetic gain through selection of the most productive and resilient families and to decipher the role of crown forms of Norway spruces (Picea abies (L.) Karst.), we used 24 families with a classical crown (pyramidalis) and 24 with a narrow crown (pendula) from eight provenances, growing in a 25-year-old comparative trial. The annual wood characteristics (ring width and early- and latewood), the wood resistance (expressed by latewood proportion (LWP)), and the growth response to climate of the two spruce crown forms were investigated. No significant differences between the two spruce forms were found regarding the ring width characteristics. However, three pendula families of Stâna de Vale I provenance exhibited the highest LWP and could be included in a future selection strategy, the respective trait having also high heritability. Radial growth was positively and significantly correlated with previous September and current July precipitation and negatively with current June temperature. Both spruce forms showed good recovery capacity after a drought event. [Termes IGN] segmentationRésumé : (Auteur) Tree height and crown diameter are two common individual tree attributes that can be estimated from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) images thanks to photogrammetry and structure from motion. This research investigates the potential of low-cost UAV aerial images to estimate tree height and crown diameter. Two successful flights were carried out in two different seasons corresponding to leaf-off and leaf-on conditions to generate Digital Terrain Model (DTM) and Digital Surface Model (DSM), which were further employed in calculation of a Canopy Height Model (CHM). The CHM was used to estimate tree height using low pass and local maximum filters, and crown diameter was estimated based on an Invert Watershed Segmentation (IWS) algorithm. UAV-based tree height and crown diameter estimates were validated against field measurements and resulted in 3.22 m (10.1%) and 0.81 m (7.02%) RMSE, respectively. The results showed high agreement between our estimates and field measurements, with R2=0.808 for tree height and R2=0.923 for crown diameter. Generally, the accuracy of the results was considered acceptable and confirmed the usefulness of this approach for estimating tree heights and crown diameter. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Efficient management of roadside trees for local governments is important. Mobile Mapping System (MMS) equipped with a high-density LiDAR scanner has the possibility to be applied to estimate DBH of roadside trees using point clouds. In this study, we propose a method for detecting roadside trees and estimating their DBHs automatically from MMS point clouds. In our method, point clouds captured using the MMS are mapped on a 2D image plane, and they are converted into a wireframe model by connecting adjacent points. Then, geometric features are calculated for each point in the wireframe model. Tree points are detected using a machine learning technique. The DBH of each tree is calculated using vertically aligned circles extracted from the wireframe model. Our method allows robustly calculating the DBH even if there is a hump at breast height. We evaluated our method using actual MMS data measured in an urban area in Tokyo. Our method achieved a high extraction performance of 100 percent of precision and 95.1 percent of recall for 102 roadside trees. The average accuracy of the DBH was 2.0 cm. These results indicate that our method is useful for the efficient management of roadside trees. [Termes IGN] tomographie radarRésumé : (auteur) Forest height is an essential input parameter for forest biomass estimation, ecological modeling, and the carbon cycle. Tomographic synthetic aperture radar (TomoSAR), as a three-dimensional imaging technique, has already been successfully used in forest areas to retrieve the forest height. The nonparametric iterative adaptive approach (IAA) has been recently introduced in TomoSAR, achieving a good compromise between high resolution and computing efficiency. However, the performance of the IAA algorithm is significantly degraded in the case of a small tomographic aperture. To overcome this shortcoming, this paper proposes the robust IAA (RIAA) algorithm for SAR tomography. The proposed approach follows the framework of the IAA algorithm, but also considers the noise term in the covariance matrix estimation. By doing so, the condition number of the covariance matrix can be prevented from being too large, improving the robustness of the forest height estimation with the IAA algorithm. A set of simulated experiments was carried out, and the results validated the superiority of the RIAA estimator in the case of a small tomographic aperture. Moreover, a number of fully polarimetric L-band airborne tomographic SAR images acquired from the ESA BioSAR 2008 campaign over the Krycklan Catchment, Northern Sweden, were collected for test purposes. The results showed that the RIAA algorithm performed better in reconstructing the vertical structure of the forest than the IAA algorithm in areas with a small tomographic aperture. Finally, the forest height was estimated by both the RIAA and IAA TomoSAR methods, and the estimation accuracy of the RIAA algorithm was 2.01 m, which is more accurate than the IAA algorithm with 3.25 m.
