[Termes IGN] positionnement cinématique en temps réelRésumé : (auteur) The Brazilian territory contains approximately 160 million hectares of pastures, and it is necessary to develop techniques to automate their management and increase their production. This technical note has two objectives: First, to estimate the canopy height using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry; second, to propose an equation for the estimation of biomass of Brazilian savanna (Cerrado) pastures based on UAV canopy height. Four experimental units of Panicum maximum cv. BRS Tamani were evaluated. Herbage mass sampling, height measurements, and UAV image collection were simultaneously performed. The UAVs were flown at a height of 50 m, and images were generated with a mean ground sample distance (GSD) of approximately 1.55 cm. The forage canopy height estimated by UAVs was calculated as the difference between the digital surface model (DSM) and the digital terrain model (DTM). The R2 between ruler height and UAV height was 0.80; between biomass (kg ha−1 GB—green biomass) and ruler height, 0.81; and between biomass (kg ha−1 GB) and UAV height, 0.74. UAV photogrammetry proved to be a potential technique to estimate height and biomass in Brazilian Panicum maximum cv. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) Different techniques utilized for mapping various crops are mainly based on using training dataset. But, due to difficulties of access to a well-represented training data, development of automatic methods for detection of crops is an important need which has not been considered as it deserves. Therefore, main objective of present study was to propose a new automatic method for canola (Brassica napus L.) mapping based on Sentinel 2 satellite time series data. Time series data of three study sites in Iran (Moghan, Gorgan, Qazvin) and one site in USA: (Oklahoma), were used. Then, spectral reflectance values of canola in various spectral bands were compared with those of the other crops during the growing season. NDVI, Red and Green spectral bands were successfully applied for automatic identification of canola flowering date using the threshold values. Examination of the fisher function indicated that multiplication of the near-infrared (NIR) band by the sum of red and green bands during the flowering date is an efficient index to differentiate canola from the other crops. The Kappa and overall accuracy (OA) for the four study sites were more than 0.75 and 88%, respectively. Results of this research demonstrated the potential of the proposed approach for canola mapping using time series of remotely sensed data. [Termes IGN] volume en boisRésumé : (Auteur) Stem volume is a key attribute of Eucalyptus forest plantations upon which decision-making is based at diverse levels of planning. Quantifying volume through remote sensing can support a proper management of forests. Because of limitations on spaceborne optical and synthetic aperture radar sensors, this study integrated both types of datasets assembled using support vector regression (SVR) to retrieve the stand volume of Eucalyptus plantations. We assessed different combinations of sensors and a minimum number of plots to develop an SVR model. Finally, the best SVR performance was compared with other analytical methods already tested and in the literature: multilinear regression, artificial neural networks (ANN), and random forest (RF). Here, we introduce a test for comparative analysis of the performance of different methods. We found that SVR accurately predicted stem volume of Brazilian fast-growing Eucalyptus forest plantations. Gaussian radial basis was the most suitable kernel function. Integrating the optical and L-band backscatter data increased the predictive accuracy compared to a single sensor model. Combining NIR-band data from ALOS AVNIR-2 and backscatter of L-band horizontal emitted and vertical received (HV) electric fields from ALOS PALSAR produced the most accurate SVR model (with an R2 of 0.926 and root mean square error of 11.007 m3/ha). The number of field plots sufficient for model development with non-redundant explanatory variables was 77. Under this condition, SVR performed similarly to ANN and outperformed the multiple linear regression and random forest methods. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Forest fires are expected to be more frequent and more intense with climate change, including in temperate and mountain forest ecosystems. In the Alps, forest vulnerability to fire resulting from interactions between climate, fuel types, vegetation structure and tree resistance to fire is little understood. This paper aims at identifying trends in the vulnerability of Alpine forest ecosystems to fire at different scales (tree species, stand level and biogeographic level) and according to three different climatic conditions (cold season, average summer and extremely dry summer). To explore Alpine forest vulnerability to fire, we used surface fuel measurements, forest inventory and fire weather data to simulate fire behaviour and ultimately post-fire tree mortality across 4438 forest plots in the French Alps. The results showed that cold season fires (about 50% of the fires in the French Alps) have a limited impact except on low-elevation forests of the Southern Alps (mainly Oak, Scots pine). In average summer conditions, mixed and broadleaved forests of low elevations suffer the highest mortality rates (up to 75% in coppices). Finally, summer fires occurring in extremely dry conditions promote high mortality across all forest communities. Lowest mortality rates were observed in high forest stands composed of tree species presenting adaptation to surface fires (e.g. thick bark, high canopy) such as Larch forests of the internal Alps. This study provides insights on the vulnerability of the main tree species and forest ecosystems of the French Alps useful for the adaptation of forest management practices to climate changes.
