[Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (auteur) Unoccupied aerial vehicles (UAV) with RGB-cameras are affordable and versatile devices for the generation of a series of remote sensing products that can be used for forest inventory tasks, such as creating high-resolution orthomosaics and canopy height models. The latter may serve purposes including tree species identification, forest damage assessments, canopy height or timber stock assessments. Besides flight and image acquisition parameters such as image overlap, flight height, and weather conditions, the focal length, which determines the opening angle of the camera lens, is a parameter that influences the reconstruction quality. Despite its importance, the effect of focal length on the quality of 3D reconstructions of forests has received little attention in the literature. Shorter focal lengths result in more accurate distance estimates in the nadir direction since small angular errors lead to large positional errors in narrow opening angles. In this study, 3D reconstructions of four UAV-acquisitions with different focal lengths (21, 35, 50, and 85 mm) on a 1 ha mature mixed forest plot were compared to reference point clouds derived from high quality Terrestrial Laser Scans. Shorter focal lengths (21 and 35 mm) led to a higher agreement with the TLS scans and thus better reconstruction quality, while at 50 mm, quality losses were observed, and at 85 mm, the quality was considerably worse. F1-scores calculated from a voxel representation of the point clouds amounted to 0.254 with 35 mm and 0.201 with 85 mm. The precision with 21 mm focal length was 0.466 and 0.302 with 85 mm. We thus recommend a focal length no longer than 35 mm during UAV Structure from Motion (SfM) data acquisition for forest management practices. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Larches in the Sudetes are very sensitive to the currently changing climatic factors, and an extreme negative response to drought is observed. In this study, temporal changes in the climate-growth relationship of European larch were analyzed using moving-window correlation. Change-point detection analysis was performed to determine whether there is a temporal connection between tree-ring growth responses and changes in climatic factors trends. The Random Forest predictor importance determination method was used to establish the set of climatic factors that influence larch tree-ring growth the most and to show how this set changes over time. Additionally, cluster analysis was applied to find spatial growth patterns and to generalize the growth response of larch. The results indicate that the main clustering factor is altitude. Nevertheless, an increasing unification of the larch’s response to dominant climatic factors is observable throughout the whole study area. This unification is expressed in the increasingly positive and recently dominant effect of May temperature. A progressively negative influence of the temperature in the summer and late autumn of the year preceding growth was observed, as was an increasing influence of water availability in the summer months. The study indicates that there is a connection between the observed changes and the recent rapid rise in temperature, which has consequently had a negative influence on water availability. The growth of this tree species in the Sudetes is expected to be very limited in the future due to its sensitivity to drought, the predicted increase in temperatures and thermal extremes, and the decrease of the share of summer precipitation in the annual total. [Termes IGN] régression par quantileRésumé : (auteur) Tree height (H) is one of the most important tree variables and is widely used in growth and yield models, and its measurement is often time-consuming and costly. Hence, height–diameter (H–D) models have become a great alternative, providing easy-to-use and accurate tools for H prediction. In this study, H–D models were developed for Larix olgensis A. Henry in northeastern China. The Chapman–Richards function with three predictors (diameter at breast height, dominant tree height, and relative size of individual trees) performed best. Nonlinear mixed-effects (NLME) models and nonlinear quantile regressions (NQR9, nine quantiles; NQR5, five quantiles; and NQR3, three quantiles) were further used and improved the generalized H–D model, successfully providing accurate H predictions. In addition, the H predictions were calibrated using several measurements from subsamples, which were obtained from different sampling designs and sizes. The results indicated that the predictive accuracy was higher when calibrated by using any number of height measurements for the NLME model and more than three height measurements for the NQR3, NQR5, and NQR9 models. The best sampling strategy for the NLME and NQR models involved sampling medium-sized trees. Overall, the newly developed H–D models can provide highly accurate height predictions for L. olgensis. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) National Forest Inventories (NFIs) perform systematic forest surveys across space and time. They are hence powerful tools to understand climate controls on forest growth at wide geographical scales and account for the effects of local abiotic and biotic interactions. To investigate the effects of climate change upon growth dynamics of four major European conifer species along elevation and continentality gradients, we herein provide an original harmonization of the French and Austrian NFI datasets. The growth of Norway spruce, Scots pine, silver fir and European larch over the 1996–2016 period was studied in pure and even-aged plots across different ecological regions. We derived climate-driven growth trends from > 65, 000 radial increment series filtered out from major biotic and abiotic influences using statistical modeling. We further identified primary environmental drivers of conifer growth by regressing growth trends against regionally aggregated biotic and abiotic forest attributes. Negative growth trends were observed in continental regions undergoing the most rapid warming and thermal amplitude contraction over the study period. Negative trends were also associated with lower forest structural heterogeneity and, surprisingly, with greater available water capacity. Remarkably, we observed these associations both at the inter- and intra-species levels, suggesting the universality of these primary growth determinants. Our study shows that harmonized NFI data at the transnational level provide reliable information on climate–growth interactions. Here, greater forest structural complexity and greater water resource limitation were highlighted as drivers of greater forest resilience to climate change at large-scale. This result forms crucial bases to implementing climate-smart forest management. [Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Accurate spatial information regarding forest types and tree species is immensely important for efficient forest management strategies. In the UK and particularly in Wales, creating a spatial inventory of larch (Larix sps.) plantations that encompasses both the public and private forests has become one of the highest priorities of woodland management policies, particularly given the need to respond to the rapid spread of Phytophthora ramorum fungal disease. For directing disease control measures, national scale, regularly updated mapping of larch distributions is essential. In this study, we applied a ExtraTree classifier machine learning algorithm to multi-year (June 2015 and December 2019) multi-path composites of vegetation indices derived from 10 m Sentinel-2 satellite data (spectral range used in this study: 490–2190 nm) to map the extent of larch plantations across Wales. For areas identified as woody vegetation, areas under larch plantations were associated with a needle-leaved leaf type and deciduous phenology, allowing differentiation from broad-leaved deciduous and needle-leaved evergreen types. The model accuracies for validation, which included overall accuracy, producer’s and user’s accuracies, exceeded 95% and the F1-score was greater than 0.97 for all forest types. Comparison against an independent reference dataset indicated all map accuracies above 90% (F1-score higher than 0.92) with the lowest value being 90.3% for the producer’s accuracy for larch. Short wave infrared and red-edge based indices were particularly useful for discriminating larch from other forest types. Capacity for updating information on clear-felling of larch stands through annual updates of a woody mask was also introduced. The resulting maps of larch plantations for Wales are the most current for Wales covering public as well as private woodlands and can be routinely updated. The classification approach has potential to be transferred to a wider geographical area given the availability of open-source multi-year Sentienl-2 datasets and robust calibration datasets.
