[Termes IGN] sylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) Industrial forest plantation expansion is dramatically impacting the environment (biodiversity, soil, water, etc.) and social sphere. Since the enactment of Decree Law 701 (DL 701) in 1974 under the military government of Augusto Pinochet, forestry practices in Chile have become more intensive (genetic manipulation, high yield clearcutting and short rotation). The law (and its successive updates) covers up to 75% of plantation costs and is the keystone of pine and eucalyptus forest expansion. This paper presents a pluriannual detection model for monitoring and characterizing the high cutting frequency of these timber plantations. Thirteen Landsat and SPOT images taken between 1976 and 2008 are used and combined with ground data (oblique aerial photography, GPS field surveys and field sheets). A trichromatic composition is built from spectral information taken from a Red and Mid-Infrared (MIR) wavelength along a temporal gradient of 32 years. This multi-temporal on-screen visual interpretation has led to a dynamic interpretation grid which reflects forest management stages in direct relation with pine and eucalyptus crop cycles. The method was tested on various time-steps covering the entire time period on two spatial scales — local and regional. All the spatio-temporal results are conclusive and the model established by remote sensing is of operational value. [Termes IGN] variabilité génétiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Key message : Despite variable dynamics of genetic diversification at the different altitudinal levels, strong gene flow tends to standardize larch genetic diversity: the larch forest distributed along the altitudinal gradient can be regarded as a single population.
Context : While in forest tree species many studies focus on the structure of the genetic diversity at the natural range and at the forest stand levels, few studies have worked at intermediate levels like the landscape level.
Aims : We tried to determine to what degree altitude variation can affect the genetic diversity and the local structure of the genetic diversity of European larch (Larix decidua Miller) at the landscape level.
Methods : Using microsatellite markers, we determined the between- and within-plot genetic structure and the spatial genetic structure (SGS) of four altitudinal plots distributed between 1,350 and 2,300 m a.s.l. in a European larch forest located in the French Alps.
Results : A homogenous neutral genetic structure was detected along this gradient. The intensity of the SGS was found to be stronger at 2,300 m and decreased at the 2,000-m plot. It was low or non-existent at the 1,700- and 1,350-m altitudinal levels.
Conclusion : Our results suggest that the genetic structure observed at the landscape level in this European larch forest was only slightly affected by climatic variation, human activities, or historical events. However, the variation of intensity of the SGS within the altitudinal plots indicates the existence of variable genetic dynamics, despite the globally uniform genetic structure along the altitudinal gradient.

[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierMots-clés libres : species distribution model Résumé : (auteur) In order to preserve forest ecosystem services under climate change, site suitability for tree species has to be re-assessed and management strategies have to be developed to adapt species composition. Thereby, it is reasonable to consider information on both site suitability estimations based on current species distribution and also stand productivity determined by tree growth. Currently, models for species distribution (SDMs) and tree growth are used to investigate the response of tree species to climate. However, both approaches were only applied separately so far. In this study, SDMs and growth models for Picea abies, Fagus sylvatica, Abies alba and Pinus sylvestris were calculated based on the German national forest inventories. We asked whether there is a positive relation between a tree species’ occurrence and its growth and what can be learned by their joint interpretation. The two approaches resulted in different patterns with respect to the considered environmental variables. Tree growth and occurrence probabilities were not positively correlated. This may be explained by the influence of forest pathogens and competition on species distribution by means of an increase in mortality. We concluded that the consideration of demographic processes as drivers of species distribution improves the reliability of estimates for site suitability and additionally provides information on productivity.
