[Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (auteur) Man-made objects, such as buildings and roads, which are important targets for information extraction from high spatial resolution (HSR) remote sensing images, often feature straight boundaries. This study employs this knowledge on HSR image segmentation by embedding a straight-line constraint in regionbased image segmentation. A new concept called collinear and ipsilateral neighborhood is proposed and applied to hardboundary constraint-based image segmentation for accuracy improvement. In the experimental areas, the method accuracy measured by recall ratio r increases from 0.036 to 0.048 (on the average) after the refinement, with significantly smaller decreases in precision p that are all less than 0.006. In sum, the proposed technique effectively reduces over-segmentation errors and maintains the same level of under-segmentation error ratio, particularly in man-made areas. It facilitates subsequent objectbased image analyses, including feature extraction, object recognition, and classification. [Termes IGN] traitement automatique de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) This paper describes a semi-automatic procedure for cartographic mapping using high resolution SAR and interferometric SAR data. Various two-dimensional features are extracted and combined in order to achieve a basic yet effective recognition of the elements in the scene. Many relevant elements of the landscape are automatically extracted without requiring any deep interaction with the operator. Being based on geometric models assuming regularity of shapes and patterns, the procedure is well suited for detecting man-made features, such as the road network (outside and inside human settlements) and built-up areas. It can be used, however, to extract natural features, focusing on different geometric models. Moreover, extracted elements of the scene can be grouped into higher level ones, such as crossroads, bridges and overpasses, through data fusion at the feature level, because the procedure is characterized by a multi-scale, object-based approach. [Termes IGN] traitement géométrique de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) A region-based level set segmentation was developed for the automatic detection of man-made objects from aerial and satellite images. The essence of the approach is to optimize the position and the geometric form of an evolving curve, by measuring information within the regions that compose a particular image partition based on their statistical description. The present region-based variational model is fully automated without the need to manually specify the position of the initial contour. Furthermore, it converges after a small number of iterations, allowing real-time applications. The developed algorithm was tested for the detection of roads, buildings and other man-made objects in a number of aerial and satellite images. The effectiveness of the algorithm is demonstrated by the experimental results and the performed qualitative and quantitative. [Termes IGN] traitement géométrique de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we propose the use of Geometric Activity (GA) features for detecting man-made objects in urban areas using VHR satellite imagery. These features describe the geometric context of a pixel without the necessity of segmentation and can be integrated as extra bands in a per-pixel classification. Two main types of GA features were investigated: ridge features based on the well-known facet model and morphological features obtained by applying closing transforms with structuring elements of different size and shape. Our findings show a substantial increase in classification accuracy for the man-made object classes “roads and buildings with dark roof” after inclusion of GA features. Next to GA features, the use of object-based features derived from eCognition®, containing both geometric and textural information, was also investigated for per-pixel classification. Accuracies obtained with object-based features are comparable to the accuracies obtained with GA features. The inclusion of both GA features and object-based features further improves the overall accuracy. GA features and object-based features thus contain complementary information. [Termes IGN] segmentation multi-échelleRésumé : (Auteur) Multi-resolution segmentation, as one of the most popular approaches in object-oriented image segmentation, has been greatly enabled by the advent of the commercial software, eCognition. However, the application of multi-resolution segmentation still poses problems, especially in its operational aspects. This paper addresses the issue of optimization of the algorithm-associated parameters in multi-resolution segmentation. A framework starting with the definition of meaningful objects is proposed to find optimal segmentations for a given feature type. The proposed framework was tested to segment three exemplary artificial feature types (sports fields, roads, and residential buildings) in IKONOS multi-spectral images, based on a sampling scheme of all the parameters required by the algorithm. Results show that the feature-type-oriented segmentation evaluation provides an insight to the decision-making process in choosing appropriate parameters towards a high-quality segmentation. By adopting these feature-type-based optimal parameters, multi-resolution segmentation is able to produce objects of desired form to represent artificial features.
