[Termes IGN] surface imperméableRésumé : (auteur) Impervious surface mapping is essential for urban environmental studies. Spectral Mixture Analysis (SMA) and its extensions are widely employed in impervious surface estimation from medium-resolution images. For SMA, inappropriate endmember combinations and inadequate endmember classes have been recognized as the primary reasons for estimation errors. Meanwhile, the spectral-only SMA, without considering urban spatial distribution, fails to consider spectral variability in an adequate manner. The lack of endmember class diversity and their spatial variations lead to over/underestimation. To mitigate these issues, this study integrates a hierarchical strategy and spatially varied endmember spectra to map impervious surface abundance, taking Wuhan and Wuzhou as two study areas. Specifically, the piecewise convex multiple-model endmember detection algorithm is applied to automatically hierarchize images into three regions, and distinct endmember combinations are independently developed in each region. Then, spatially varied endmember spectra are synthesized through neighboring spectra using the distance-based weight. Comparative analysis indicates that the proposed method achieves better performance than Hierarchical SMA and Fixed Four-endmembers SMA in terms of MAE, SE, and RMSE. Further analysis suggests that the hierarchical strategy can expand endmember class types and considerably improve the performance for the study areas in general, specifically in less developed areas. Moreover, we find that spatially varied endmember spectra facilitate the reduction of heterogeneous surface material variations and achieve the improved performance in developed areas. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Building function type is an important parameter for urban planning and disaster management. However, existing identification methods do not always correctly recognize all building functions because of missing point of interest (POI) data in private areas. In this study, we proposed a hierarchical data-mining model to identify building function types using accessible auxiliary data, which was then applied to a case study. Residential building property was assessed to address missing residential POIs. The building functions were assigned to one of five different types, or a mixed-function type. Standard deviation and mean values extracted from remotely sensed images, distances to major roads, and building shape parameters were used to infer the function types of buildings without assigned function types. The proposed model was able to identify 65% of buildings not previously assigned as residential through the POI, with an overall accuracy of 87%. In addition, all buildings were successfully assigned a function type of residential, commercial, office, warehouse, public service, or mixed-function, with an overall accuracy of 85% for unclassified buildings. Our results demonstrated that missing POI data in private areas could be addressed by integration with multisource data using a simple method. [Termes IGN] segmentationRésumé : (auteur) GaoFen-7 (GF-7) satellite mission is further expanding the very high resolution 3D mapping application. Carrying the first civilian Chinese sub-meter resolution stereo satellite sensors, GF-7 satellite was launched on November 7, 2019. With 0.65 meter resolution on backward view and 0.8 meter resolution forward view, GF-7 has been designed to meet the demand of natural resource monitoring, land surveying, and other mapping applications in China. The use of GF-7 for 3D city reconstruction is unfortunately restricted by the fixed large stereo view angle of forward and backward cameras with +26 and −5 degrees respectively which is not optimal for dense stereo matching in urban regions. In this paper, we intensively evaluate the quality of the GF-7 datasets by performing a series of urban monitoring applications, including road detection, building extraction and 3D reconstruction. In addition, we propose a 3D reconstruction workflow which uses the land cover classification result to refine the stereo matching result. Six sub-urban regions are selected from the available datasets in the middle of Germany. The results show that basic elements in urban scenes like buildings and roads could be detected from GF-7 datasets with high accuracy. With the proposed workflow, a 3D city model with a visually observed good quality can be delivered. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (auteur) Land Surface Phenology is an important characteristic of vegetation, which can be informative of its response to climate change. However, satellite-based identification of vegetation transition dates is hindered by inconsistencies in different observation platforms, including band settings, viewing angles, and scale effects. Therefore, time-series data with high consistency are necessary for monitoring vegetation phenology. This study proposes a data harmonization approach that involves band conversion and bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) correction to create normalized reflectance from Landsat-8, Sentinel-2A, and Gaofen-1 (GF-1) satellite data, characterized by the same spectral and illumination-viewing angles as the Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Nadir BRDF Adjusted Reflectance (NBAR). The harmonized data are then subjected to the spatial and temporal adaptive reflectance fusion model (STARFM) to produce time-series data with high spatio–temporal resolution. Finally, the transition date of typical vegetation was estimated using regular 30 m spatial resolution data. The results show that the data harmonization method proposed in this study assists in improving the consistency of different observations under different viewing angles. The fusion result of STARFM was improved after eliminating differences in the input data, and the accuracy of the remote-sensing-based vegetation transition date was improved by the fused time-series curve with the input of harmonized data. The root mean square error (RMSE) estimation of the vegetation transition date decreased by 9.58 days. We concluded that data harmonization eliminates the viewing-angle effect and is essential for time-series vegetation monitoring through improved data fusion. [Termes IGN] rizièreRésumé : (auteur) Optical satellite imagery has been widely used to monitor leaf area index (LAI). However, most studies have focussed on single- or dual-source data, thus making little use of a growing repository of freely available optical imagery. Hence this study has evaluated the feasibility of quad-source optical satellite imagery involving Landsat-8, Sentinel-2A, China’s environment satellite constellation (HJ-1 A and B) and Gaofen-1 (GF-1) in modelling rice green LAI over a test site located in southeast China at two growing seasons. With the application of machine learning regression models including Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), k-Nearest Neighbour (k-NN) and Gradient Boosting Decision Tree (GBDT), results indicated that regression models based on an ensemble of decision trees (RF and GBDT) were more suitable for modelling rice green LAI. The current study has demonstrated the feasibility of quad-source optical imagery in modelling rice green LAI and this is relevant for cloudy areas.
