Such datasets are often cumbersome for rational processing, and their processing is time consuming. Therefore, there are several methods that can enable the reduction of the dataset size. One of them is generalisation of the Digital Terrain Model (DTM) or the reduction method within the initial processing of measurement data. Another method can be the Optimum Dataset (OptD) method. This paper presents two approaches towards decreasing the Light Detection and Ranging dataset. The first approach is based on the process of DTM generalisation, the second one is based on the application of the OptD method. The reduced datasets were used for isoline map creation depicting the overflow land in open-pit mining. It was proved that the reduction needs to be planned deliberately and that the degree of reduction should be performed in a way that allows to maintain the characteristics of the terrain. [Termes IGN] Triangulated Irregular NetworkRésumé : (Auteur) This paper reports an investigation into the generalization of a grid-based digital elevation model (DEM) for the purpose of terrain analysis. The focus is on the method of restructuring the grid-based surface elevation data to form a triangulated irregular network (TIN) that is optimized to keep the important terrain features and slope morphology with the minimum number of sample points. The critical points of the terrain surface are extracted from the DEM based on their significance, measured not only by their local relief, but also by their importance in identifying inherent geomorphological and drainage features in the DEM. A compound method is proposed by integrating the traditional point-additive and feature-point methods to construct a drainage-constrained TIN. The outcome is then compared with those derived from other selected methods including filtering, point-additive or feature-point algorithms. The results show that the compound approach is capable of taking advantage of both point-additive and feature-point algorithms to maximally keep the terrain features and to maintain RMSE at an acceptable level, while reducing the elevation data points by over 99%. The analytical result also shows that the proposed method outperforms the compared methods with better control in retaining drainage features at the same level of RMSE. [Termes IGN] représentation multipleRésumé : (Auteur) Map generalisation is a modelling process in which it is typical that detailed, high dimensional geographic phenomena are reduced down to a set of `higher order', yet more generalized set of phenomena (for example, a large cluster of buildings is reduced to `city'). This process of generalisation necessarily requires us to handle large volumes of data which results in high processing overheads. One way of managing this is to partition the data. When geographically partitioning data, we need to partition in such a way that each partition can be generalized without having to consider regions outside any given partition. The focus of this paper is to explore partitioning and generalisation methodologies that can be applied to digital elevation data - the ambition being to derive generalized descriptions of morphology at the National Scale (for the UK). The paper describes and compares two solutions to this problem, and demonstrates how it is possible to apply generalisation algorithms to national coverages. [Termes IGN] valléeRésumé : (Auteur) As an important method of terrain representation, a DEM usually needs to be generalized at multiple resolutions in order to adapt to different applications. The preservation of main landscape features is an important constraint in DEM generalization. The traditional generalization method based on signal processing by resampling or low-pass filtering is just a data compression operation rather than the abstraction of real information. This study develops a structured analysis method to generalize DEM data through the identification of minor valleys and filling the corresponding depression positions. The generalization process has two steps: geographic decision and geometric operation. According to their hydrological significance, the unimportant valley branches are detected and their corresponding coverage is filled by raising the terrain to make the terrain surface smoother. In contrast to the conventional algorithms based on image processing, this method is able to retain the main geographical characteristics more effectively in terrain representation. [Termes IGN] quantité discrèteRésumé : (Auteur) This article reviews the formation of the 3-D Douglas-Peucker algorithm on the basis of analyzing the nature of the 2-D algorithm and further studies the application of the 3-D method to the automated global generalization of digital elevation model (DEM). Compared to the general 3-D Douglas-Peucker algorithm put forward by the authors in the previous publication, further improvements and expansion of the algorithm have been included in this article, namely, (1) for randomly distributed points, 'loneliness index' of the current point has been taken as the dynamic weight factor of the point-plane distance, so as to improve the selection of the feature points; (2) aiming at the mass volume of the regular square grids, which forms the majority of the DEM data; three measures have been suggested in this article for the improvement of the efficiency of the automated generalization. Experiments have proven that these measures can greatly heighten the efficiency of the DEM generalization with satisfactory results and have offered us the practical possibility of on-the-fly global generalization of DEM with a huge volume of data.
