[Termes IGN] système d'information historiqueRésumé : (auteur) The purpose of this document is to provide guidance to new and inexperienced gazetteer builders, especially those constructing a digital gazetteer of historical places using historical maps, and in particular those building a gazetteer as a means to an end of answering specific research questions vs. those building a gazetteer as an end in itself to be used by the general research community. In support of this target audience, the following is an accumulation of lessons learned while using historical maps to create digital gazetteers of historical places. The lessons cover gazetteer planning, design, and construction issues. As an overview of how to use historical maps to create a digital gazetteer of historical places, this document can provide new and inexperienced gazetteer builders with starting points for in-depth study of these and associated issues. An example gazetteer is provided to illustrate the lessons covered here. [Termes IGN] web mappingRésumé : (auteur) The article deals with a comprehensive information system of the historic Vltava River valley. This system contains a number of resources, which are described. For old maps, which are the basis of the whole system, their georeferencing and potential problems in creating seamless mosaics are described. Other sources of data include old photographs, which are localized and stored in the system, along with the definition point of the place from which they were probably taken. The vectorization of data is described, not only for area features used for the analysis of land-use changes, but also for the vectorization of contours. These were vectorized from old maps and are substantial for the creation of historic DEM. Vectorized footprints of buildings and vectors of other functional areas subsequently serve as a basis for the procedural modeling of the virtual 3D landscape. The creation of such a complex and broad information system cannot be described in one article. The aim of this text is to draw attention to a possible approach to the presentation and visualization of the historic landscape, along with links to important documents. [Termes IGN] WebSIGRésumé : (auteur) Lublin in the period of the Lublin Union (1569) is an interdisciplinary research project conducted by the “Grodzka Gate – NN Theatre” Centre in Lublin as a part of the celebration of the 450th anniversary of signing the Union of Lublin Act - one of the most important historical events in 16th-century Europe, during which the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was constituted. This paper aims to present the research process by which an innovative Historical GIS web platform, based on an object-orientated database design, was tested and refined. The portal uses four pillars of spatial-temporal databases (events, people, places, sources) to collect data and develop historical narratives presenting various events in the history of the city and the region. The idea behind the project was to develop an Internet portal that would acknowledge modern users with the historical event of the Union of Lublin from the perspective of the then resident of Lublin. What is known about the 16th-century Lublin? What did the city and its surroundings look like? Who lived in Lublin? Who used to visit it? What architectural elements and traces of cultural heritage have been saved to this day? The reconstruction of the 16th-century urban space was carried out using the retrogression method of 11 early plans and maps of Lublin, verified and supplemented with the latest archaeological findings, accurate architectural research (geo-radar, laser scanning) and an extensive archival query. Thanks to the Historical GIS technology, the research results have been published in the form of a universal platform (www.teatrnn.pl/unia-lubelska), with an interactive web-map of 16th-century Lublin (Google Maps API implementation) and modelling urban facilities with 3D technology (SketchUp & Unity). The designed technological solution is scalable, making it possible to search and combine individual records (e.g. person-event-address) as well as entire groups of records on higher hierarchical levels (social groups - sequences of events - multifaceted maps). The portal editing panel is dedicated to humanists (historians, journalists, sociologists, etc.) without specialist knowledge of GIS. The functions integrated with the CMS facilitate mapping the content collected in the database and embedding the narration in an adequate context of the historical space. As a result, editors preparing a thematic article have a searchable set of documents, facts, people and places at their disposal, and their task is to fill the narrative with descriptive content. This is a universal model for building deep maps and spatial narratives. [Termes IGN] système d'information historiqueRésumé : (auteur) We collected 92,832 user-contributed and publicly available family trees from rootsweb.com, including 250 million individuals who were born in North America and Europe between 1630 and 1930. We cleaned and connected the family trees to create a population-scale and longitudinal family tree dataset using a workflow of data collection and cleaning, geocoding, fuzzy record linkage and a relation-based iterative search for connecting trees and deduplication of records. Given the largest connected component of nearly 40 million individuals, and a total of 80 million individuals, we generated, to date, the largest population-scale and longitudinal geo-social network over centuries. We evaluated the representativeness of the family tree dataset for historical population demography and mobility by comparing the data to the 1880 Census. Our results showed that the family trees were biased towards males, the elderly, farmers, and native-born white segments of the population. Individuals were highly mobile – in our 1880 sample of parent-child pairs where both were born in the U.S., 47% were born in different states. Our findings agreed with prior studies that people migrated from East to West in horizontal bands, and the trend was reflected in the dialects and regional structure of the U.S. Numéro de notice : A2021-876 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : GEOMATIQUE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1080/13658816.2020.1821885 Date de publication en ligne : 30/09/2020 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1080/13658816.2020.1821885 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=99139

[Termes IGN] système d'information historiqueRésumé : (auteur) Ottoman cartographic materials are important sources of information on 19th and early 20th-century Greater Syria. However, large portions of this corpus have yet to be examined. This study explores a rare mid-19th-century Ottoman map of the Province of Saida preserved in the Ottoman Archive in Istanbul. It lists travel times between villages, towns, and administrative centers in Greater Syria under Ottoman rule, and shows the network of routes connecting these localities. Using an historical GIS approach, we evaluated the characteristics of the map and its cartographical accuracy and merits. The network of routes on the map is compared to route reconstructions based on least-cost-path principles. The discussion focuses on the historical context of the map and the ways in which it reflects the strength of Ottoman rule and familiarity with Greater Syria at the time.
