[Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) The aims of the study are the description of the distribution patterns of main forest tree species along complex environmental gradients and niche characterization, using the data from 772 plots from the third Spanish National Forest Inventory. Simultaneously, we would like to identify the relative contribution of spatial and environmental variation to the species compositional patterns. Spatially structured environmental and fine-scale spatial variables explained more tree compositional distribution than broad-scale spatial variables, suggesting that niche partitioning is the main process influencing forest species abundances along this gradient. However, vegetation compositional changes were mainly determined by the north–south topographic-climatic differences (primary coenocline), although steepness was also related to the particular location of some plant communities. Unimodal response curves dominate along the gradients, with tree species optima at different points, providing evidence of a sufficient amount of compositional turnover. Niche location of trait-related tree species is closely located. Tree species occupying environments with sharp contrast or transitional environments have broadest niches, whereas those species occupying localized habitats showed the narrowest niches. The methodology used provides an objective assessment of the shape of species' responses along complex ecological gradients, as well as of the spatial and environmental factors implicated in their distribution patterns using datasets from national forest inventories. The description of the main factors determining the gradients and the species distributions and niche characteristics will improve our ability to discuss potential conservation management goals or threats due to land uses changes and future climate change. [Termes IGN] sous-boisRésumé : (auteur) Estimating forest structural attributes is one of the essential forestry-related remote sensing applications. The methods applied so far typically concentrate on the structure of the overstorey. For various conservation and management applications, however, information on lower layers is also of great interest. Detecting understorey cover by remote sensing is challenging, as passive sensors do not penetrate to the forest ground layer. An alternative to these is 3D metrics from active light detection and ranging (LiDAR). Here, we evaluate this technique for describing the vegetation density of multiple stand layers within the temperate stands of a large protected area in south-eastern Germany. We combined LiDAR metrics and information on forest habitat types with regression models to investigate LiDAR metrics that are significantly correlated with vegetation density. The top canopy and the herbal layer showed strong correlations with the applied LiDAR metrics, whereas the predictive power was lower for the intermediate stand layers. Moreover, our results suggest that the relationship between LiDAR predictors and vegetation density depends on the forest type. A comparison of the regression models with random forest predictions showed no major improvement in predictive error. In conclusion, this study highlights the value of the LiDAR metrics for characterizing the structural properties of lower forest layers, which has implications for wildlife and forest management applications, especially in protected areas. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) In the context of forest and landscape management, the use of introduced tree species is an important and controversial topic. On one hand, the species can provide an opportunity for timber production and for adapting the species composition within forests so that forests can better cope with the changing climate while on the other hand, such species may cause biodiversity loss and/or disturbance to native ecosystems. Introduced tree species in European forests – opportunities and challenges is a compilation of scientific and practical knowledge on introduced tree species in European forests and contains contributions from 89 authors from 18 countries. The historical context of species introductions plays a key role in understanding the current as well as possible future distribution of tree species. There has been an intensive discussion on the interactions between the introduced tree species and their introduced environment, and also on the processes that may lead to the species becoming invasive within their introduced range. The risk of a species becoming invasive can be evaluated using suitable risk assessments that help us to predict the future behaviour of the species, and also the potential contributions of these species to ecosystem services provided by the forests where they occur. Therefore, the links between the introduced tree species and the key topics such as economics, climate change, pests and diseases and effects on biodiversity are also assessed in order to demonstrate the complexity of the issues pertaining to the introduction of tree species. Case studies of selected introduced tree species occurring in Europe are presented to demonstrate the necessity to manage ecosystems in order to fulfil certain goals; the case studies cover species- specific and site-specific experiences as sharing the application of suitable management practices is of particular interest.
