[Termes IGN] interféromètrie par radar à antenne synthétiqueRésumé : (Auteur) TanDEM-X and TerraSAR-X platforms form together the first spaceborne single-pass polarimetric interferometer in space. This allows, for the first time, the acquisition of spaceborne polarimetric synthetic aperture radar interferometry (Pol-InSAR) data without the disturbing effect of temporal decorrelation. This paper aims to assess the potential of such data for forest applications. For this, single- and dual-pol data acquired over a boreal, a temperate, and a tropical site were investigated to characterize X-band penetration and polarization diversity of the interferometric coherence measurements. Pol-InSAR forest height inversion schemes have been proposed and implemented for the singleand dual-pol cases and cross validated against LIDAR reference measurements for all sites. The single-pol inversion relies on an external ground digital terrain model (DTM) and performed well for all sites with correlation coefficients r2 between 0.80 and 0.98. The dual-pol inversion does not require an external DTM but depends on the visibility of the whole forest layer. Accordingly, its performance varied with forest structure and season: The best performance was achieved for the summer acquisition of the boreal test site (r2 = 0.86) and for the winter acquisition of the temperate test site (r2 = 0.77). For the tropical test site, only a weak correlation (r2 = ~0.50) could be established. [Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) The aim of the study was to assess the effects of competition at both stand and tree levels on climate tree-growth relationships of 414 Abies alba and 243 Fagus sylvatica trees growing in 2 contrasting ecological conditions (north- and south-facing) under mountainous continental climate (mean altitude: 886 m). Stand level competition was considered through three stand basal area (SBA) modalities (Low: 32 m2/ha, Medium: 41 and High: 49) while tree level competition was assessed through three social statuses (SST, Dominant, Codominant and Suppressed trees). A strong specific response to climate was pointed out with different key periods; growth of Abies being mainly driven by previous and current late summer temperatures, while that of Fagus was controlled by April and June ones. No obvious difference between facing sides was evidenced. Competition at stand level prevailed on competition at tree level. In Low and Medium SBA, trees exhibited similar responses to climate whatever their social statuses. On the opposite, sensitivity to summer drought increased with dominancy in high SBA. Inter-specific differences and consequences for forest management are discussed. A prediction model is calibrated between local point cloud statistics and forest parameters measured on field plots. Unfortunately, inaccurate positioning of field measures lead to a bad matching of forest measures with remote sensing data. The potential of using tree diameter and position measures in cross-correlation with ALS data to improve co-registration is evaluated. The influence of the correction on ALS models is assessed by comparing the accuracy of basal area prediction models calibrated or validated with or without the corrected positions. In a coniferous, uneven-aged forest with high density ALS data and low positioning precision, the algorithm co-registers 91% of plots within two meters from the operator location when at least the five largest trees are used in the analysis. The new coordinates slightly improve the prediction models and allow a better estimation of their accuracy. In a forest with various stand structures and species, lower ALS density and differential Global Navigation Satellite System measurements, position correction turns out to have only a limited impact on prediction models. However, variations in modeled height cause data pits, which form a challenging problem as they disrupt CHM smoothness, negatively affecting tree detection and subsequent biophysical measurements. These pits appear where laser beams penetrate deeply into a tree crown, hitting a lower branch or ground before producing the first return. In this study, we develop a new algorithm that generates a pit-free CHM raster, by using subsets of the lidar points to close pits. The algorithm operate robustly on high-density lidar data as well as on a thinned lidar dataset. The evaluation involves detecting the finding to those achieved by using a Gaussian smoothed CHM. The results show that our pit-free CHMs derived from high-and low-density lidar data significantly improve the accuracy of tree detection. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser terrestreRésumé : (Auteur) Context : Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) provides a valuable tool for the retrieval of detailed individual-tree structural parameters, but has never previously been applied to young stands under field conditions.
Aims: The aim was to explore the performance of TLS in a young tree plantation located in a heterogeneous environment in subtropical China.
Methods: We investigated 438 young trees for congruence between direct field and TLS measurements of total tree height, stem diameter at ground height, and length and height of the longest branch using correlation tests. We applied generalized linear models to examine whether congruence was affected by the observed structural parameter or extrinsic factors (e.g., potential occlusion, point cloud quality).
Results: TLS made it possible to detect trees higher than 40cm. The TLS-retrieved data were highly congruent with the data obtained from direct measurements. The poor descriptions of stems and branches of some individuals of small-sized and leaf-on tree species were due to occlusion by ground vegetation and leaf-on branches. Observed structural parameter and extrinsic factors did not explain the variance between the two approaches.
