[Termes IGN] trafic urbainRésumé : (auteur) Movement patterns of intra-urban goods/things and the ways they differ from human mobility and traffic flow patterns have seldom been explored due to data access and methodological limitations, especially from systemic and long timescale perspectives. However, urban logistics big data are increasingly available, enabling unprecedented spatial and temporal resolutions to this issue. This research proposes an analytical framework for exploring intra-urban goods movement patterns by integrating spatial analysis, network analysis and spatial interaction analysis. Using daily urban logistics big data (over 10 million orders) provided by the largest online logistics company in Hong Kong (GoGoVan) from 2014 to 2016, we analyzed two spatial characteristics (displacement and direction) of urban goods movement. Results showed that the distribution of goods displaceFower law or exponential distribution of human mobility trends. The origin–destination flows of goods were used to build a spatially embedded network, revealing that Hong Kong became increasingly connected through intra-urban freight movement. Finally, spatial interaction characteristics were revealed using a fitting gravity model. Distance lacked substantial influence on the spatial interaction of goods movement. These findings have policy implications to intra-urban logistics and urban transport planning. [Termes IGN] surface cultivéeRésumé : (auteur) The combined study of vegetation coverage (VC) and land use change provides important scientific guidance for the restoration and protection of arid regions. Taking Hongjian Nur (HJN) Lake in the desert region as a case study, the VC of this area was calculated using a normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), which is based on a mixed pixel decomposition method. A grey forecasting model (GM) (1, 1) was used to predict future VC. The driving factors of VC and land use change were analyzed. The results indicate that the average VC of the whole watershed showed a gradual increase from 0.29 to 0.49 during 2000–2017. The prediction results of the GM VC showed that the greening trend is projected to continue until 2027. The area of farmland in the watershed increased significantly and its area was mainly converted from unused land, grassland, and forest. The reason for increased VC may be that the combination of the exploitation of unused land and climate change, which is contrary to the country’s sustainable development goals (SDG; goal 15). Therefore, the particularities of the local ecological environment in China’s desert area needs to be considered in the development of ecological engineering projects. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Background: Under ongoing climate and land-use change, biodiversity is continuously decreasing and monitoring biodiversity is becoming increasingly important. National Forest Inventory (NFI) programmes provide valuable time-series data on biodiversity and thus contribute to assessments of the state and trends in biodiversity, as well as ecosystem functioning. Data quality in this context is of paramount relevance, particularly for ensuring a meaningful interpretation of changes. The Swiss NFI revisits about 8%–10% of its sample plots regularly in repeat surveys to supervise the quality of fieldwork.
Methods: We analysed the relevance of observer bias with equivalence tests, examined data quality objectives defined by the Swiss NFI instructors, and calculated the pseudo-turnover (PT) of species composition, that is, the percentage of species not observed by both teams. Three attributes of woody species richness from the latest Swiss NFI cycles (3 and 4) were analysed: occurrence of small tree and shrub species (1) on the sample plot and (2) at the forest edge, and (3) main shrub and trees species in the upper storey.
Results: We found equivalent results between regular and repeat surveys for all attributes. Data quality, however, was significantly below expectations in all cases, that is, as much as 20%–30% below the expected data quality limit of 70%–80% (proportion of observations that should not deviate from a predefined threshold). PT values were about 10%–20%, and the PT of two out of three attributes decreased significantly in NFI4. This type of uncertainty – typically caused by a mixture of overlooking and misidentifying species – should be considered carefully when interpreting change figures on species richness estimates from NFI data.
Conclusions: Our results provide important information on the data quality achieved in Swiss NFIs in terms of the reproducibility of the collected data. The three applied approaches proved to be effective for evaluating the quality of plot-level species richness and composition data in forest inventories and other biodiversity monitoring programmes. As such, they could also be recommended for assessing the quality of biodiversity indices derived from monitoring data.

[Termes IGN] TurquieRésumé : (auteur)Civil engineering structures (e.g., bridges, dams) are exposed to deformation under the influence of various factors such as water level changes, landslides, tectonic phenomena, etc. These deformations must be periodically monitored. Various deformation analysis approaches have been developed to describe the behaviour of a structure or natural process. The most significant task in deformation analysis is to correctly classify whether the points are stable or unstable. In this study, various robust weight functions for determination of stable/unstable points were applied to the Deriner Dam using GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) data measured over four different periods. The robust weight functions examined included the Andrews, Beaton−Tukey, Cauchy, Danish, Fair, German−McClure, Hampel, Huber, L1, and L1−L2. Test results were evaluated, and the performances of the different deformation analysis methods were determined. It was concluded that the horizontal deformations based on GNSS data determined by these robust weight functions were in good agreement with each other, except for the L1−L2. The results of all approaches were also compared with the results of the θ2–Criteria method. According to the results obtained, although the θ2–Criteria and the robust methods yielded nearly similar results, the results of the θ2–Criteria method were thought to be more reliable. [Termes IGN] raisonnement inductifRésumé : (auteur) A major focus of cartographic research can be framed within two broad trends involving geovisual analytic and critical cartographic approaches. Understated in the development both of scientific and critical approaches to the field of cartography has been the role of cartographic inference. Making inferences from maps is fundamental to the visual analytical tradition and the thinking/communication continuum. Reasoning is also fundamental to critical cartography and the development of critiques relies on inference based on “evidence” encoded or inscribed in a map or set of maps. The social construction of a map and the map’s use have a significant impact on the types of inferences that are made, but conclusions must be carefully scrutinized with respect to these inferences. This study examines the Piercean notions of abductive, deductive, and inductive inference and their application to cartographic inquiry from both scientific and critical perspectives. A study of John Snow’s famous map of a cholera outbreak in London shows the evolution of this map from an instrument of scientific inquiry to one of historical discourse. This historical discourse also shows the continuous unfolding of “Snow’s map” as a mapping practice. By understanding how logical inferences change over time as the context of a map within society changes, this study shows biases inherent within cartographic expression integral to both scientific and critical lines of inquiry.
