[Termes IGN] précision des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) In the present study, the qualities of the HY-2B along-track significant wave heights (SWH) are assessed, including precision and accuracy. A quality evaluation based on 1 Hz standard deviations is proposed to detect the precision of HY-2B SWH products. The density plots of the (SWH, std) pairs obtained by the HY-2B, Jason-2 and Jason-3 are compared. And the results indicates that the HY-2B SWH root mean square error levels are significantly lower than those observed for the other altimeters. With respect to the SWH obtained from the wave rider buoys, buoys of the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC), Jason-2 and Jason-3, the root mean square errors are 24 cm, 27 cm, 26 cm and 23 cm respectively. The comparison results confirm that the quality of the HY-2B SWH data higher. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is the national agency that conducts and supports public health research and practice. Among the CDC’s many achievements is the development of a social vulnerability index (SVI) to aid planners and emergency responders when identifying vulnerable segments of the population, especially during natural hazard events. The index includes an overall social vulnerability ranking as well as four individual themes: socioeconomic, household composition & disability, ethnicity & language, and housing & transportation. This makes the SVI dataset multivariate, but it is typically viewed via maps that show one theme at a time. This paper explores a suite of cartographic techniques that can represent the SVI beyond the univariate view. Specifically, we recommend three techniques: (1) bivariate mapping to illustrate overall vulnerability and population density, (2) multivariate mapping using cartographic glyphs to disaggregate levels of the four vulnerability themes, and (3) visual analytics using Euler diagrams to depict overlap between the vulnerability themes. The CDC’s SVI, and by extension, vulnerability indices in other countries, can be viewed in a variety of cartographic forms that illustrate the location of vulnerable groups of society. Viewing data from various perspectives can facilitate the understanding and analysis of the growing amount and complexity of data. [Termes IGN] véhicule sans piloteRésumé : (Auteur) This article presents the origins and evolution of midrange terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), spanning primarily from the 1950s to the time of publication. Particular attention is given to developments in hardware and software that document the physical dimensions of a scene as a point cloud. These developments include parameters for accuracy, repeatability, and resolution in the midrange—millimeter and centimeter levels when recording objects at building and landscape scales up to a kilometer away. The article is split into two parts: Part one starts with early space and defense applications, and part two examines the survey applications that formed around TLS technologies in the 1990s. The origins of midrange TLS, ironically, begin in space and defense applications, which shaped the development of sensors and information processing via autonomous vehicles. Included are planetary rovers, space shuttles, robots, and land vehicles designed for relative navigation in hostile environments like space and war zones. Key people in the midrange TLS community were consulted throughout the 10-year period over which this article was written. A multilingual and multidisciplinary literature review—comprising media written or produced in Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, Italian, and Russian—was also an integral part of this research.
