[Termes IGN] PologneRésumé : (auteur) The knowledge on forest resources is important for sustainable forest management at local and national level. The aim of this paper is to examine the efficacy of the Support Vector Machine (SVM) approach for tree cover mapping based on Sentinel-2 images and to explore the potential of the Sentinel-2 data for the assessment of tree cover. Sentinel-2 is a constellation of two European satellites providing innovative wide-swath (up to 290 km), high-resolution and multispectral data (13 spectral bands at 10, 20 and 60 m spatial resolution). The study area is located in the Forest Promotion Complex, which is a part of the Knyszyn Forest Landscape Park in Poland. The SVM classification was performed on the single images (spring and summer season) and on multi-date Sentinel-2 images (images from two dates classified simultaneously). In addition, the use of high-resolution bands and a combination of the 10 m and 20 m spatial resolution data was examined. The overall accuracy for all performed classification was very high and reached the level of 96.7%–99.6%, which con-firms that SVM classification can be successfully applied for tree cover mapping. The analysis showed that the Sentinel-2 images acquired in the middle of the vegetation season, when the leaves are fully developed are more suitable for tree cover mapping than the images acquired in spring. Results showed that the statistical model driven by MODIS data has the potential to accurately estimate LAI and CC, while the structure of the calibration models varied between on- and off-years because of the different leaf change and bamboo shoot production characteristics between these types of years. LAI and CC (gram per square meter of ground area) are important parameters for determining carbon exchange between Moso bamboo forest (Phyllostachys edulis (Carrière) J. Houz.) and the atmosphere. This study evaluated the ability of a statistical model driven by MODIS data to accurately estimate the LAI and CC in Moso bamboo forest, and differences in the LAI and CC between on-years (years with great shoot production) and off-years (years with less shoot production) were analyzed. The LAI and CC measurements were collected in Anji County, Zhejiang Province, China. Indicators of LAI and CC were calculated from MODIS data. Then, a regression analysis was used to build relationships between the LAI and CC and various indicators on the basis of leaf change and bamboo shoot production characteristics of Moso bamboo forest. LAI and CC were accurately estimated by using the regression analysis driven by MODIS-derived indicators with a relative root mean squared error (RMSEr) of 9.04 and 13.1%, respectively. The structure of the calibration models varied between on- and off-years. Long-term time series analysis from 2000 to 2015 showed that LAI and CC differed largely between on- and off-years. This study demonstrates that LAI and CC of Moso bamboo forest can be estimated accurately by using a statistical model driven by MODIS-derived indicators, but attention should be paid to differences in the calibration models between on-and off-years. [Termes IGN] pansharpening (fusion d'images)Résumé : (Auteur) Change detection (CD) is one of the most important uses of remote sensing, and it plays a key role in many applications. Satellite hyperspectral imagery has a high spectral resolution but low spatial resolution, which results in images with mixed pixels. To improve spatial resolution in hyperspectral images, multiresolution fusion techniques must be used, one which is called pansharpening (PS). This paper investigates the sensitivity and performance of CD methods by fusing Advanced Land Imager and Hyperion datasets based on a PS algorithm. Three different CD algorithms are used here for that purpose: cross-covariance (CC), cross equalization (CE), and principal component analysis (PCA). In addition, Gram-Schmidt (GS), HySure, and PCA are utilized as the PS methods of choice. The CD results obtained from both the original hyperspectral data and from the spatially fused data are compared to reveal the potential of PS in CD applications. Furthermore, the presented procedure also shows that the HySure method in particular yields good results for the CD. [Termes IGN] teneur en chlorophylle des feuillesRésumé : (Auteur) The operational monitoring of forest decline requires the development of remote sensing methods that are sensitive to the spatiotemporal variations of pigment degradation and canopy defoliation. In this context, the red-edge spectral region (RESR) was proposed in the past due to its combined sensitivity to chlorophyll content and leaf area variation. In this study, the temporal dimension of the RESR was evaluated as a function of forest decline using a radiative transfer method with the PROSPECT and 3D FLIGHT models. These models were used to generate synthetic pine stands simulating decline and recovery processes over time and explore the temporal rate of change of the red-edge chlorophyll index (CI) as compared to the trajectories obtained for the structure-related Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The temporal trend method proposed here consisted of using synthetic spectra to calculate the theoretical boundaries of the subspace for healthy and declining pine trees in the temporal domain, defined by CItime=n/CItime=n+1 vs. NDVItime=n/NDVItime=n+1. Within these boundaries, trees undergoing decline and recovery processes showed different trajectories through this subspace. The method was then validated using three high-resolution airborne hyperspectral images acquired at 40 cm resolution and 260 spectral bands of 6.5 nm full-width half-maximum (FWHM) over a forest with widespread tree decline, along with field-based monitoring of chlorosis and defoliation (i.e., ‘decline’ status) in 663 trees between the years 2015 and 2016. The temporal rate of change of chlorophyll vs. structural indices, based on reflectance spectra extracted from the hyperspectral images, was different for trees undergoing decline, and aligned towards the decline baseline established using the radiative transfer models. By contrast, healthy trees over time aligned towards the theoretically obtained healthy baseline. The applicability of this temporal trend method to the red-edge bands of the MultiSpectral Imager (MSI) instrument on board Sentinel-2a for operational forest status monitoring was also explored by comparing the temporal rate of change of the Sentinel-2-derived CI over areas with declining and healthy trees. Results demonstrated that the Sentinel-2a red-edge region was sensitive to the temporal dimension of forest condition, as the relationships obtained for pixels in healthy condition deviated from those of pixels undergoing decline.
