The European turtle dove is one of the farmland birds that has declined markedly in Europe, leading the IUCN to downgrade its status in 2015 from “Near Threatened” to “Vulnerable”. Knowledge of how habitat factors and agricultural practices influence the turtle dove population is crucial for the conservation of this species through the implementation of targeted measures. Here we investigate how foraging and nesting habitats influence the abundance of turtle doves at national and regional scales, using a 23-year dataset from point counts carried out throughout France, a stronghold country for this species during the breeding season. We found that turtle dove abondance was positively affected by fallow lands, both at national and regional scales. Turtle dove abundance was also negatively affected by fodder crop area at national scale, but the effect was detected in only four of the 13 French regions. We also showed that an increase in hedgerows length had a positive effect on turtle dove abundance. On the other hand, forest edges length showed a bell-shaped trend, suggesting that an increase in forest edges length may have a favourable effect on turtle dove abundance only up to a given threshold. We suggest that targeted conservation measures combining an increase in fallow lands and hedgerows length could allow the stabilisation or even an increase in turtle dove abundance in France, but also in European countries with similar landscapes. [Termes IGN] Wuhan (Chine)Résumé : (auteur) Contrast to the global forest, few trees live in cities but contribute significantly to urban environment and human health. However, the classical satellite-derived land cover/forest cover products with limited resolution are not fine enough for the identification of urban tree, which is usually appeared in small size and intersected with infrastructure. To relieve the dilemma, this study developed an urban tree specific sub-pixel mapping (SPM) architecture with deep learning approach, which aimed to generate 2m fine-scale urban tree cover product from 10 m Sentinel-2 images for large-scale area of 34 metropolises in China. The proposed approach has remarkable reconstruction ability for delineating the contextual characteristic of the urban tree patterns, and reliable generalization ability to large-scale area. In addition, this study creates a large-volume urban tree cover dataset (UTCD) with 0.13 billion urban tree samples at 2 m resolution, which fills the deficiency of standard dataset in urban tree cover research field. Quantitative analysis of our products was conducted on two typical study sites of Beijing and Wuhan. The results show that our products recover averagely more than 58.72% of urban tree covers that have been underestimated in the existing land cover/forest cover products, and outperforms the state-of-the-art approach both visually and quantitatively, by averagely 11.31% improvement in overall accuracy. From our annual products during 2016–2020, we found an evolution characteristic of urban tree cover: it is more stable in developed cities like Beijing, while more fluctuated in developing cities like Wuhan, and the alteration are usually concentrated at the outer-ring of downtown, which may be caused by the municipal planning and the land development of real estate industry. [Termes IGN] TasmanieRésumé : (auteur) Digital aerial photogrammetry (DAP) has emerged as a potentially cost-effective alternative to airborne laser scanning (ALS) for forest inventory methods that employ point cloud data. Forest inventory derived from DAP using area-based methods has been shown to achieve accuracy similar to that of ALS data. At the tree level, individual tree detection (ITD) algorithms have been developed to detect and/or delineate individual trees either from ALS point cloud data or from ALS- or DAP-based canopy height models. An examination of the application of ITDs to DAP-based point clouds has not yet been reported. In this research, we evaluate the suitability of DAP-based point clouds for individual tree detection in the Pinus radiata plantation. Two ITD algorithms designed to work with point cloud data are applied to dense point clouds generated from small- and medium-format photography and to an ALS point cloud. Performance of the two ITD algorithms, the influence of stand structure on tree detection rates, and the relationship between tree detection rates and canopy structural metrics are investigated. Overall, we show that there is a good agreement between ALS- and DAP-based ITD results (proportion of false negatives for ALS, SFP, and MFP was always lower than 29.6%, 25.3%, and 28.6%, respectively, whereas, the proportion of false positives for ALS, SFP, and MFP was always lower than 39.4%, 30.7%, and 33.7%, respectively). Differences between small- and medium-format DAP results were minor (for SFP and MFP, differences between recall, precision, and F-score were always less than 0.08, 0.03, and 0.05, respectively), suggesting that DAP point cloud data is robust for ITD. Our results show that among all the canopy structural metrics, the number of trees per hectare has the greatest influence on the tree detection rates. Mobile Mapping System (MMS) equipped with a high-density LiDAR scanner has the possibility to be applied to estimate DBH of roadside trees using point clouds. In this study, we propose a method for detecting roadside trees and estimating their DBHs automatically from MMS point clouds. In our method, point clouds captured using the MMS are mapped on a 2D image plane, and they are converted into a wireframe model by connecting adjacent points. Then, geometric features are calculated for each point in the wireframe model. Tree points are detected using a machine learning technique. The DBH of each tree is calculated using vertically aligned circles extracted from the wireframe model. Our method allows robustly calculating the DBH even if there is a hump at breast height. We evaluated our method using actual MMS data measured in an urban area in Tokyo. Our method achieved a high extraction performance of 100 percent of precision and 95.1 percent of recall for 102 roadside trees. The average accuracy of the DBH was 2.0 cm. These results indicate that our method is useful for the efficient management of roadside trees.
