The IMA is designed as an open architecture that can accommodate a large number of mobile users and services possibly distributed across a wide geographical area. Today's users are mobile and are equipped with small powerful devices. Using wireless communication, these devices are/will be capable of exchanging digital data and voice from almost any location. In this paper, we present the IMA architecture which is aimed at replacing the monolithic approach to geographic information systems with a new dynamic, lean, and customizable system supporting spatially-oriented applications. We present this vision, describe the design of the IMA and discuss a sample application. [Termes IGN] utilisateur nomadeRésumé : (Auteur) Ad-hoc shared-ride trip planning in an urban environment is a complex task within a non-deterministic transportation network. Mobile geosensor networks provide the technical environment for realizing ad-hoc shared-ride trip planning: Network nodes are autonomous agents that interact locally by ad-hoc short-range communication and arrange for shared rides. In a mobile geosensor network, communication costs are critical because of constraints regarding bandwidth, available energy, and memory. This paper introduces spatio-temporal concepts from time geography, which can be employed during the planning process to significantly reduce communication costs. We will integrate network-based algorithms and different wayfinding strategies to assist both shared-ride clients and hosts in finding optimal travel assignments. Multi-agent geosimulation in a real street network is used to demonstrate the applicability of the approach and quantitatively confirm the theoretically foreseen reduction in communication costs. [Termes IGN] synergicielRésumé : (Auteur) This paper addresses a key problem in the development of visual-analytical collaborative tools, how to design map-based displays to enable productive group work. We introduce a group communication theory, the Collective Information Sharing (CIS) bias, and discuss how it relates to communicative goals that need to be considered when designing collaborative, visually enabled, spatial-decision-support tools. The CIS bias framework suggests that key goals for developing such tools should be: (a) the harnessing of a group's collective knowledge emerging from collaborative discussions and (b) reducing the repeat of information that has already been shared within the group. We propose that web-accessible, map annotation tools are ideally suited to advancing these goals and outline how the CIS bias framework informs how geospatial annotation tools can maximize the potential of collaborative efforts. We offer design recommendations for annotation tools that function to: (a) facilitate access to and recall of geographically referenced discussion contributions, (b) document ideas for private as well as public discussion spaces, and (c) elicit all group members to contribute information in a given collaborative effort.
