[Termes IGN] utilisateurRésumé : (Auteur) This paper focuses on improving the efficiency and effectiveness of dynamic and interactive maps in relation to the user. A label placement method with an improved algorithmic efficiency is presented. Since this algorithm has an influence on the actual placement of the name labels on the map, it is tested if this efficient algorithms also creates more effective maps: how well is the information processed by the user. We tested 30 participants while they were working on a dynamic and interactive map display. Their task was to locate geographical names on each of the presented maps. Their eye movements were registered together with the time at which a given label was found. The gathered data reveal no difference in the user’s response times, neither in the number and the duration of the fixations between both map designs. The results of this study show that the efficiency of label placement algorithms can be improved without disturbing the user’s cognitive map. Consequently, we created a more efficient map without affecting its effectiveness towards the user. [Termes IGN] utilisateurRésumé : (Auteur) Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) has the potential to offer benefits to end-users over and above those of Professional Geographic Information (PGI). A multi-methods approach, consisting of participatory observation, focus groups and diary studies, was used to study how VGI and PGI were actually used by a target user group. A theoretical framework of information relevance was used to understand the attributes of information that were most important in relation to the characteristics of the users' activity and their community. The key finding was that the discussion amongst GIS designers should not be whether to choose VGI or PGI as the information data set, but to consider which combination of VGI and PGI relating to different geographic features and task characteristics would best meet the users' needs. VGI is likely to be most relevant to the user when a geographic feature is dynamic rather than static in nature, and can also provide a level of detail that is unlikely to arise through PGI. These findings have implications for how different forms of information are most effective for different usage situations. Above all, a case is presented for the implementation of User Centred Design (UCD) principles when integrating VGI and PGI together in a single mashup-based product. [Termes IGN] temps réelRésumé : (Auteur) The International GNSS Service has embarked on a project to provide a high-accuracy GPS satellite orbit and clock data service in real time. The service will also provide 1-Hz data streams of GPS and GLONASS data from a network of global continuously operating reference stations. The IGS real-time data and orbit and clock products will be of immense benefit for geoscience studies and a host of other science and engineering applications. A team of authors associated with this project discusses the genesis and status of the real-time service and the plans to provide an initial operating capability. [Termes IGN] histoire des sciences et techniquesRésumé : (Auteur) The International Association of Geodesy (IAG) is a constituent Association of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) since 1922, and the successor organization of the Mitteleuropäische Gradmessung. Its activities have changed dramatically from its beginning in 1862 till today. While it started with the aim of determining the regional anomalies of the Earth's curvature in Europe by connecting astronomical observatories through triangulation networks, it concentrates now on the observation and modelling of the phenomena and effects of physical processes in the System Earth employing mainly space techniques. The structural and scientific developments over time are summarised, and the present structure and activities are described in detail.
