[Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (auteur) Invasive alien plants (IAPs) threaten biodiversity and critical ecosystem services worldwide. There is, therefore, an urgent need to develop intervention measures to control the spread of IAPs. Efforts to control and monitor the spread of IAPs would require their current and detailed distribution over a large geographic area. Recently launched multispectral instrument on-board Sentinel-2 provides free data with good spatiotemporal and spectral resolution, compared to Landsat datasets. The Sentinel-2 dataset, therefore, can be a useful source of the IAPs spatial information required for detection and monitoring purposes. We combined Sentinel-2 data with a radiative transfer model to discriminate IAPs (Acacia mearnsii and Acacia dealbata) from surrounding native tree species in Van Reenen, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The forward mode of combined PROSPECT leaf optical properties model and SAIL canopy bidirectional reflectance model, also referred to as PROSAIL was used to simulate reflectance corresponding to bands of Sentinel-MSI, while the PROSAIL model inversion retrieved leaf area index (LAI) and canopy chlorophyll contents (CCC) of the IAPs and native species. Both reflectance and retrieved properties were used to map the distribution of the species within the study area. Our results showed that A. mearnsii and A. dealbata could be accurately discriminated from the surrounding native trees using integrated PROSAIL Sentinel-2 based model. We found that CCC– and LAI-based (% accuracy = 92.8%, 91.4% for CCC and LAI, respectively) modelling produced a higher classification accuracy than field sampling-based modelling (Accuracy = 90.2% (IAP), 82.2% (NAT) and kappa coefficient = 0.84 (IAP), 0.78 (NAT)). Simulated bands corresponding to Sentinel-2 data, on the other hand, produced species maps comparable to field sampling-based maps. Overall, the integrated PROSAIL Sentinel-2 inversion approach proved suitable for detecting and mapping IAPs over a large area. Due to the high spatiotemporal coverage of Sentinel-2, satellite images, the model developed showed the potential to contribute to the IAPs monitoring systems. Attempts at ensuring water availability has been formulated using standard water models. This study developed a water balance model using Remote Sensing and GIS techniques during periods of water surplus and deficit across pre-millennium (1996 – 2000) and the post-millennium (2010 – 2014) periods within an urbanized Sub-Saharan city. Digital Elevation Model of the basin was prepared to generate flow direction and to delimit the watershed using ArcHydro tools in ArcGIS 10.3. Supervised classification was used to delineate the landuse classes from Landsat imageries. The result revealed that 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2010 and 2013 were periods of water deficit, while 1999, 2011, 2012 and 2014 were periods of water surplus. This study affirmed the need to reactivate institutional frameworks that are responsible for assessment, conservation, management and planning of water resources for sustainable utilization. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) In order to understand the impact of summer drought on dry deposition of tropospheric ozone (O3), we compared severe and mild drought periods of summer 2018 in a mountain Norway spruce forest at Bílý Kříž, Beskydy Mts. An eddy covariance technique was applied to measure diurnal courses of the ecosystem O3 and CO2 fluxes. Low O3 deposition was recorded in the morning and evening, while the highest CO2 and O3 fluxes were recorded during the central hours of the day. Total O3 deposition during severe drought (soil humidity 13%) was significantly higher than the deposition during the mild drought period (soil humidity 19%). Our data indicate that high vapour pressure deficit and low soil humidity during severe drought led to the stomatal closure, while non-stomatal O3 deposition, associated with chemical reactions of O3 with NO and volatile organic compounds, are responsible for higher total O3 deposition during the severe drought period. Therefore, we assume that under severe drought stomatal O3 uptake decreases but non-stomatal depositions to forest ecosystems substantially increase. Remote sensing shows potential for monitoring peatlands, but most off-the-shelf data products are developed for unsaturated environments and it is unclear how well they can perform in peatland ecosystems. Sphagnum moss is an important peatland genus with specific characteristics which can affect spectral reflectance, and we hypothesized that the prevalence of Sphagnum in a peatland could affect the spectral signature of the area. This article combines results from both laboratory and field experiments to assess the relationship between spectral indices and the moisture content and gross primary productivity (GPP) of peatland (blanket bog) vegetation species. The aim was to consider how well the selected indices perform under a range of conditions, and whether Sphagnum has a significant impact on the relationships tested. We found that both water indices tested [normalized difference water index (NDWI) and floating water band index (fWBI)] were sensitive to the water content changes in Sphagnum moss in the laboratory, and there was little difference between them. Most of the vegetation indices tested [the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), enhanced vegetation index (EVI), structure insensitive pigment index (SIPI), and chlorophyll index (CIm)] were found to have a strong relationship with GPP both in the laboratory and in the field. The NDVI and EVI are useful for large-scale estimation of GPP, but are sensitive to the proportion of Sphagnum present. The CIm is less affected by different species proportions and might therefore be the best to use in areas where vegetation species cover is unknown. The photochemical reflectance index (PRI) is shown to be best suited to small-scale studies of single species. [Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) Six experiments were established between 1955 and 1962 in different parts of northern and western Britain which used replicated randomized block designs to compare the performance of two species 50:50 mixtures with pure stands of the component species. The species involved were variously lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl.), Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi Lamb. Carr.), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.), Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis Bong. Carr.) and western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla Raf. Sarg.). The first four species are light demanding, while Sitka spruce is of intermediate shade tolerance and western hemlock is very shade tolerant: only Scots pine and silver birch are native to Great Britain. In three experiments (Bickley, Ceannacroc, Hambleton), the mixtures were of two light-demanding species, while at the other three sites, the mixture tested contained species of different shade tolerance. The experiments were followed for around 50 years, similar to a full rotation of even-aged conifer stands in Britain. Five experiments showed a tendency for one species to dominate in mixture, possibly reflecting differences in the shade tolerance or other functional traits of the component species. In the three experiments, the basal area of the mixtures at the last assessment was significantly higher than predicted based on the performance of the pure stands (i.e. the mixture ‘overyielded’). In two of these cases, the mixture had had a higher basal area than found in the more productive pure stand indicating ‘transgressive overyielding’. Significant basal area differences were generally more evident at the later assessment date. The exception was in a Scots pine: western hemlock mixture where greater overyielding at the earlier date indicated a nursing (‘facilitation’) effect. In the remaining experiments, the performance of the mixture conformed to predictions from the growth of the component species in pure stands. Taken overall, the results suggest that functional traits can be used to interpret the performance of mixtures but prediction of the outcome will require better understanding of the interplay between species and site characteristics plus the influence of silvicultural interventions.
