Adult oaks (817 oaks), comprising four white oak species ( Quercus petraea , Q. robur , Q. pubescens and Q. pyrenaica ), were sampled for DNA extraction and genetic analysis (nuclear microsatellites). Leaf morphology was assessed on 336 oaks, comprising pure species and hybrids as determined by genetic assignment. This comparative study of oak leaf morphology, based on the use of two free size geometric morphometric methods and a set of leaf measurements, combined with the genetic assignment of individuals to pure species or hybrids, provided information about the differences among species and the intermediate leaf morphology of their hybrids. [Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (Editeur) A site preparation study was established in 1986 to evaluate the effect of different site preparation treatments on growth and yield of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations on the Piedmont and Upper Coastal Plain regions of the southern United States. Site preparation treatments included: (1) burn only, (2) chop-burn, (3) shear-pile-disk, (4) chop-herbicide-burn, (5) herbicide-burn, and (6) herbicide-burn-herbicide. The data from the available 19 installations at age 21 were analyzed with separate analysis of variance and a multilevel nonlinear mixed-effects modeling approach. The herbicide-burn-herbicide treatment significantly increased average Dbh, height, basal area and volume per hectare compared to all other treatments. The burn only treatment consistently ranked worst and was followed by the chop-burn treatment. The shear-pile-disk and chop-herbicide-burn treatments had similar overall growth pattern, and will approach the same level of pine volume as the herbicide-burn treatment. Loblolly pine mean annual increment in volume (m3 ha−1 y−1 ) at age 21 by treatment were: herbicide-burn-herbicide (17.9), shear-pile-disk (16.1), herbicide-burn (15.9), chop-herbicide-burn (15.4), chop-burn (14.3), and burn (11.2). An additional chop or herbicide treatment to the burn treatment significantly increased loblolly pine yield. Complete control of both herbaceous and woody completion enhanced long-term pine productivity. [Termes IGN] rusticitéRésumé : (Auteur) Genetic variation in freezing resistance was evaluated among and within six populations of Spanish wild chestnut (Castanea sativa Miller). The extent to which frost susceptibility was related to phenology and the relationship between population differentiation and climatic conditions was studied. Twigs were collected in March and November from saplings (5-year-old trees) of 41 open-pollinated families from the six populations in a provenance-progeny test, and were subjected to artificial freezing. Damage to each twig was assessed as visible browning of bud and of stem tissues. Population differences as regards frost damage traits were highly significant (p Numéro de notice : A2009-629 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1051/forest/2009059 Date de publication en ligne : 02/10/2009 En ligne : https://www.afs-journal.org/articles/forest/full_html/2009/07/f08202/f08202.html Format de la ressource électronique : url article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=72832

[Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) Small footprint full-waveform airborne lidar systems offer large opportunities for improved forest characterization. To take advantage of full-waveform information, this paper presents a new processing method based on the decomposition of waveforms into a sum of parametric functions. The method consists of an enhanced peak detection algorithm combined with advanced echo modelling including Gaussian and generalized Gaussian models. The study focuses on the qualification of the extracted geometric information. Resulting 3D point clouds were compared to the point cloud provided by the operator. 40 to 60% additional points were detected mainly in the lower part of the canopy and in the low vegetation. Their contribution to Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) and Canopy Height Models (CHMs) was then analysed. The quality of DTMs and CHM-based heights was assessed using field measurements on black pine plots under various topographic and stand characteristics. Results showed only slight improvements, up to 5 cm bias and standard deviation reduction. However both tree crowns and undergrowth were more densely sampled thanks to the detection of weak and overlapping echoes, opening up opportunities to study the detailed structure of forest stands.
