[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Within the alpine treeline ecotone tree growth is increasingly restricted by extreme climate conditions. Although intra-annual stem growth recorded by dendrometers can be linked to climate, stem diameter increments in slow-growing subalpine trees are masked by changes in tree water status. We tested the hypothesis that intra-annual radial stem growth in Pinus cembra is influenced by different climate variables along the treeline ecotone in the Austrian Alps. Dendrometer traces were compared with dynamics of xylem cell development to date onset of cambial activity and radial stem growth in spring. Daily fluctuations in stem radius reflected changes in tree water status throughout the treeline ecotone. Extracted daily radial increments were significantly correlated with air temperature at the timberline and treeline only, where budburst, cambial activity and enlargement of first tracheids also occurred quite similarly. A close relationship was detected between radial increment and number of enlarging tracheids throughout the treeline ecotone. We conclude that (i) the relationship between climate and radial stem growth within the treeline ecotone is dependent on a close coupling to atmospheric climate conditions and (ii) initiation of cambial activity and radial growth in spring can be distinguished from stem re-hydration by histological analysis. [Termes IGN] semis (sylviculture)Résumé : (auteur) ree recruitment in Mediterranean savannas is generally hampered, in contrast with the original oak forests where these savannas are derived from. We asked whether this difference in recruitment success can be explained by differential post-dispersal survival. For one year we monitored experimentally cached holm oak acorns in a savanna – forest ecosystem in Central Spain, and recorded cache pilferage, type of pilferer, boar rooting, seedling emergence, seedling survival and the cause of mortality. Cache pilferage was significantly lower in savanna (8%) than in forest (21%). However, the higher cache survival was more than offset by lower seedling emergence and, particularly, by nine times higher seedling mortality in savanna, mainly due to desiccation. Wild boar rooting did not differ between experimental caches and controls without acorns, indicating that individual cached acorns do not trigger rooting activity. Our results indicate that the difference in post-dispersal survival between savanna and forest is due to lower emergence and, primarily, higher seedling mortality in savanna, not to higher cache pilferage. Absence of safe sites such as shrubs, abundantly present in the forest, may well explain the lack of recruitment in the savanna. Management measures appear necessary for long-term persistence of Mediterranean savannas in general. [Termes IGN] Pinus pinasterRésumé : (auteur) Although accumulation of decomposing litter temporarily removes nutrients from active circulation, it creates a medium that is more suitable for nutrient uptake where soil conditions are unfavorable. A pot experiment was conducted using labeling of isotopically exchangeable phosphate ions of the soil and applying the dilution principle to accurately assess the contribution of the forest floor to P nutrition of maritime pine seedlings (Pinus pinaster Aït.). Three-week-old maritime pine seedlings were planted in pots containing either mineral soil (MS) or mineral soil covered with a forest floor layer (MS+FF). After 130 d, P uptake was still insignificant in the MS treatment while the P content of the seedlings in the MS+FF treatment increased tenfold with respect to the initial P content. In the latter treatment, the forest floor contributed 99.1% of the P supply to pine seedlings. The higher P uptake from the forest floor than from the mineral soil may be explained by its lower ability to retain inorganic P, which enabled a higher concentration of inorganic P to be maintained in solution. [Termes IGN] JaponRésumé : (auteur) Castanopsis sieboldii var. sieboldii is an evergreen broadleaved canopy tree that grows on Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu Islands in Japan. A closely-related, hybridizing, congener species, C. cuspidata var. cuspidata, has different leaf epidermis structure and different seed nuts morphology compared to C. sieboldii var. sieboldii. Furthermore, the habitats in which the two species grow often indicate different water requirements. Analysis of genetic diversity, using transcribed sequences, will provide a sound basis for the management of this species, allowing successful reforestation, incorporating phylogeographic conservation. In order to obtain transcripts sequences for the species and to develop transcript-based markers, we constructed and analyzed a cDNA library, surveyed microsatellite sequences within it and designed PCR primers for the microsatellites. The cDNA library was constructed using tissue from the inner bark of C. sieboldii var. sieboldii; 3354 Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs) were identified. We constructed 2417 putative unigenes and assigned putative functions to 1856 of them. Three hundred and fourteen microsatellites were found within the putative unigenes and 16 EST-SSR (Simple Sequence Repeat) markers were developed. The EST-SSR markers developpe in this study should facilitate future analysis of the genetic diversity of this and related species.
