[Termes IGN] Utah (Etas-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) Urban areas serve as humanity's principal habitat. Because of this, it is important to understand the biophysical components of the urban environment – including the urban forest. The goal of this study was to determine the potential to classify individual urban trees as a function of spectral features derived from airborne hyperspectral data. To determine this, 500 urban trees were identified (through fieldwork) in the built-up zone of Provo-Orem, Utah, USA. Visible and near infrared airborne hyperspectral imagery was collected over the same area. The 500 trees were identified on the images, and spectral features of each tree were extracted. Principal components, vegetation indices, band means, and band ratios were all used as features to discriminate between different tree species. The tree classification was 82% accurate when just the six principal components were used. Classification accuracy increased to 91.4% after combining vegetation indices, band mean values and band ratios. [Termes IGN] seuillage d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Effective separation of buildings from trees is a major challenge in image-based automatic building detection. This paper presents a three-step method for effective separation of buildings from trees using aerial imagery and lidar data. First, it uses cues such as height to remove objects of low height such as bushes, and width to exclude trees with small horizontal coverage. The height threshold is also used to generate a ground mask where buildings are found to be more separable than in so-called normalized DSM. Second, image entropy and color information are jointly applied to remove easily distinguishable trees. Finally, an innovative rule-based procedure is employed using the edge orientation histogram from the imagery to eliminate false positive candidates. The improved building detection algorithm has been tested on different test areas and it is shown that the algorithm offers high building detection rate in complex scenes which are hilly and densely vegetated. [Termes IGN] tomographieRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a new hardware-accelerated approach to the volumetric reconstruction of trees from photographs, based on the methods introduced by Reche-Martinez et al. The system applies an adapted computed tomography (CT) procedure that uses a set of oriented photographs with known interior and exterior camera parameters for creating a 3D model of a tree, while requiring considerably fewer images than standard CT. As tomographic reconstructions are complex tasks that result in time-consuming processes for high-resolution volumes, the hitherto existing methods are improved and modified to allow an ideal parallelisation of the computations on graphics hardware. The paper delivers a detailed insight into the complete process of the reconstruction, from the acquisition and preparation of the input data to the implementation of the final system on graphics processing hardware. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) This study estimated leaf area index (LAI) of individual urban trees as a function of spectral features derived from airborne hyperspectral data. Candidate features included spectral indexes, principal components, and calibrated reflectance values. Hyperspectral images were acquired over Provo, Utah area, and LAI of 204 deciduous trees was measured in the field. These tree canopies were identified on the images, and spectral features were extracted using both whole canopy and mean-lit spectra techniques. Multiple regression and artificial neural networks were used to model leaf area and determine which spectral features were most strongly related to it. Results established that simple hyperspectral vegetation indexes explained more variation in urban tree LAI than either principal component scores or simple band reflectance values. The neural network model trained with a subset of those indexes explained more variation in LAI (R2 = 64.8 percent) than any of the multiple regression models tested. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Urban tree canopy cover is often mapped by classifying high-resolution multispectral imagery. However, it can be difficult to differentiate low-lying vegetation from tree cover using optical data alone. Combining a lidar-derived Normalized Digital Surface Model (ndsm) improves classification accuracy, but the optical imagery is often imperfectly aligned with the NDSM. Aerial imagery is normally orthorectified using the ground elevation. However, tall objects in the orthorectified imagery still suffer from relief displacement. This can cause classification errors when lidar and the aerial imagery are combined. This study presents an approach for urban tree cover mapping composed of two parts: a method for correcting the relief displacement of trees in previously orthorectified aerial imagery, and an object-based classification method which combines relief-corrected multispectral aerial imagery with a lidar-derived NDSM. Using these methods, the tree cover was mapped for a 1,600 ha region of London, Ontario, Canada with improved positional and classification accuracy.
