[Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) Forest soil biodiversity, which drives natural ecosystem multifunctionality, can be altered by incorrect forestry management practices. Pinus laricio is the most representative and widespread conifer species in Calabria, South Italy, and appropriate management is needed to maintain Pinus laricio forest for its great economic and natural value. In Europe, thinning is considered the most effective silvicultural treatment to maintain/increase the ecological value of coniferous stands. In this study, moderate thinning (MT), intense thinning (HT), and clear cut (CC) treatments were used to manage Pinus laricio stands with the aim of identifying the thinning intensity that is less detrimental to soil biodiversity. The effects of the different thinning intensities were evaluated, in two contrasting seasons (summer and winter), on the abundance, and diversity of arthropods, fungi, and bacteria colonies as well as on selected soil properties (organic matter, humification index, bulk density, pH) related to soil habitability. Results evidenced that the abundance, species richness, and diversity of arthropods, as well as fungi, bacteria colonies, and soil properties, changed with the treatments and seasons. Under HT, the greatest biodiversity and the highest amounts of arthropods, fungi, and bacteria were found in both seasons. This study finds evidence for Connell’s intermediate disturbance hypothesis, highlighting that the greatest organic carbon content and humification index, as well as the lowest bulk density, found in HT reduced the likelihood of competitive exclusion between occurring species, thereby promoting high species richness and diversity. This study gives insights into ecological relationships between understory composition related to tree species abundance and soil community. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (auteur) L’École Nationale des Eaux et Forêts de Mbalmayo dispose d’une Forêt Ecole qui subit depuis des années une dégradation dues aux activités anthropiques. Depuis plusieurs années, des activités de reboisement sont menées pour restaurer ce couvert forestier. Cependant, peu de données sont disponibles sur la superficie déjà reboisée et aussi sur la localisation et la composition floristique des parcelles reboisées. Cette étude a pour objectif de géolocaliser à l’aide des outils SIG les parcelles reboisées entre 2015 et 2019, mais aussi de donner leur superficie et leur composition floristique. Ce travail est rendu possible grâce aux outils GPS et le logiciel ArcGIS 10.3.1®, qui ont facilité la collecte et l’analyse des données. Il en découle que, de 2015 à 2019 une superficie de 5,9 ha de forêt a été reboisée, repartie sur 43 parcelles (11 parcelles mono-spécifiques et 32 parcelles polyspéciques). 3878 plants ont été inventoriés appartenant à 19 espèces. Les SIG facilitent dont le suivi des activités de reboisement. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Moving from a forest standing tree volume assessment to a biomass assessment requires knowledge of the basic density of wood which, beyond average values by species or group of species, varies greatly within and between species, environmental conditions, and the structural and management properties of the stands. Based on breakthrough innovation, the XyloDensMap project has enabled the high throughput measurement of the wood basic density of more than one hundred and ten thousand drill cores taken during four successive campaigns of the National Forest Inventory. Here we present the first results of the basic wood density of the Mediterranean forest tree species which lead to an upward estimate of 12% of the above-ground biomass of these forests. We conclude by underlining the need for additional samples for species that are poorly represented and when management issues for biomass are raised at local scales such as that of stands. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Key message: In recent decades, there has been a decline in growth in a rear-edge broadleaf forest of Fagus sylvatica , Quercus petraea , and Quercus pyrenaica . Although temperatures have been rising due to climate change, the observed decline in growth was mainly attributed to increased density and competition between trees since the cessation of traditional uses such as logging in the 1960s.
Context: In recent decades, two major factors have influenced tree growth in many forests: climate warming, which is associated with aridification and negative growth trends in many Mediterranean forests, and abandonment of forest management, resulting from forest policy in conjunction with rural depopulation in Europe, often leading to an increase in competition and a decrease in growth.
Aims: Here, we study the growth trends in a mixed forest of Fagus sylvatica, Quercus petraea, and Quercus pyrenaica, where the abandonment of traditional uses in the 1960s has been followed by an increase in tree density. In this forest, both F. sylvatica and Q. petraea reach their south-westernmost limits of distribution.
Methods: Using dendrochronological methods and growth modeling, we assess the importance of climate warming on the shifts in competitive growth advantage of these three coexisting tree species and the relative importance of climate and competition on growth trends.
Results: Q. petraea and especially F. sylvatica showed a favorable evolution of their competitive capacity, despite the increase in temperatures that has occurred in the area in recent decades. F. sylvatica presented the lowest sensitivity to climate.
