The research focusses on curved planar curves for which the accuracy is influenced not only by digitizing errors but also by the effects of the discretization. The key to the solution is given by an suitable model for planar curves. Instead of describing planar curves by the coordinates with respect to a given coordinate system one can also use a local system, which is defined by the tangent and normal directions of the curve in concerning points. In that case only the direction of the tangents has to be stored. This model is completed by the assumption that this so-called tangent angle function is an realization of an stationary and ergodic stochastic process. By use of this model results could be found for the positional accuracy, the accuracy of estimations of curvature and of line length and the accuracy of area of closed curves. It is possible to take into account digitizing errors as well as different kinds of discretization. The explorations are complemented by results for the accuracy of natural relief-dependend curves like contour lines or gradient lines. The reliability of the theoretical results has been confirmed by numerical experiments.
