Nevertheless, the operational use of what is still for the risk management community a very new technology remains rather rare. In the same time, facing an increase in losses of human lives and physical damage, citizens expect a lot from science and new technologies in helping to reduce risks and their impact. Time has therefore come to propose a full set of services to end-users in a homogeneous and consistent way, as it is already available in other domains. Aware of this urgent and essential need, some initiatives have been launched. This is the case of the SIREN project, which aims at defining, specifying and testing a dedicated service to provide Earth Observation based information for flood risk management.
