[Termes IGN] surveillance écologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The impact of global change on land surface attributes will not be uniformly distributed geographically. Changes in land surface attributes have major implications for ecosystem processes, geochemical cycles and society. Assessing the regions “at risk” of rapid land-cover changes and/or natural disasters is therefore a priority for global change research and for policies aimed at mitigating the impact of these changes. The paper describes a change detection technique based on the multi-temporal changevector to two years of SPOT VEGETATION data. The main processes detected are related to droughts, floods and deforestation. The study was extended to Europe and the whole of Africa over a time period from May 1998 to April 2000. Continental scale maps of change in surface attributes were generated over the growing seasons of every biome. Finally, a validation of the change patches identified allows us to interpret the type of change and their environmental significance.
