Among these issues, the redevelopment of derelict industrial sites, the protection of natural and urban landscapes against uncontrolled growth and the enhancement of the manmade environment, are but a few that the metropolitan region of Paris (Ile-de-France) is facing. To improve its planning instruments, IAURIF set up a GIS, the regional Geographic Information System (SIGR). It was applied in the framework of a master planning study concerning a strategic sector of the region : the Val-de-Seine. Located in the innerring of the metropolis, this area encompasses a section of the seine river along wich significant redevelopments occur due strong economic and real estate pressures. Most of the old industries formerly located on the river banks are shuting down and are being replaced by middle-rise office and housing developments. At the same time, major infrastructure works, both for new expressways, a tramway and a subway, are programmed in the sector. All these transformations, if not coherently planned, may threaten the historical landscape which constitute a major asset of the site. To address these issues, the study team developed a specific SIGR application aimed at analyzing past and potential land use changes. Base on a multidate comparison of 1982' and 1990' land use inventories, and on the combination of various layers such as building permits, building conditions, or cadastral parcels, this application significantly enhanced the scope of the study.
