Here we show how the powerful database management system, facilities of a GIS, together with the analytical capabilities of a statistical modelling system, can be used to describe and analyse records of moves made by individuals in Britain, extending over a period of 200 years. The data comprise records provided by members of Family History and Genealogy Societies in Lancashire and Cumbria. This has generated a database of over 6000 moves, undertaken by some 1800 individuals. We have analysed the data in two settings. First, in order to analyse subsets of the data and to produce effective displays, we have analysed the data in an ARCINGRES setting, using the DATABASE INTEGRATOR facilities available in Version 6 of ARC/INFO. Second, in order to perform statistical analyses of the data we have used S-Plus to explore characteristics of particular subsets of the data. The fact that the data extend over 200 years means that we can also paint a picture of the dynamics of migration. Plans are underway to extend the data collection in order to produce a comprehensive picture of longitudinal migration histories in Britain as a whole.
