GIS implementation is a long process, specially since it requires the drafting of digital base maps. This paper suggests one need not wait for GIS to be fully implemented, but start exploring how urban planning can incorporate, modify and extend this new tool. Planners do not require extremely detailed data, but they must have the right information and they may use simple digital maps, now available in most cities. This paper explores a side-track in improving GIS applications in urban planning and describes the circumstances which make it a viable proposition, as well illustrating some of the possible results. Materials and results produced during a workshop held in 1992 with a group of students from the Torino Faculty of Architecture are used as a case. Two issues were highlighted : a) how street segment geographic unit and line thematicmaps are a effective means to describe urban patterns and b) how quality variables can be employed in describing urban morphology.
