After an investigation on all housing estates in Moscow, we are facing a challenge of analyzing the data to obtain a clear picture of the city. GIS provides a way in which the statistical results can be represented spatially on the map and spatial patterns can be recognized, such as age structure within households, the height and materials of housing, correlation between these factors and clusters of these estates. Espacially when we try to build a model to simulate the historic data, we are able to see the trends of urban development and redevelopment on the location and pace. The basic data were captured in Auto CAD, then imported into ARC/INFO and Atlas-GIS. This provides some insight of Western information technology to regional planning authorities in Russia.
