This paper describes how this situation can be improved by combining a GIS with a specialised visualisation system capable of providing interactive 3D displays for manipulating volume (voxel) models. Hence, time can be treated as independent of spatial data rather than just another attribute, which enables the development of spatiotemporal isosurfaces and the extension of data exploration techniques into 4D via animation. This approach also allows us to handle and display multiple parameters more effectively meaning that information can be communicated in a more powerful manner. These advantages are illustrated by analysis of climatological data-sets and the monitoring of air pollution parameters. The techniques described are likely to become much more accessible in future with the advent of dynamic and collaborative visualisation on the Internet.
