For the inclusion of a cell in the burnt category, visual inspection techniques or soil data have been used to obtaining therefore a dependent value of the area and the study date. In this endeavour two techniques are applied on three Landsat-TM images that allow for the designation of threshold change in a statistically objective manner not dependent on neither the location nor the time of occurrence of the fire. These techniques, previously developed by the Department on NOAA-AVHRR images consist of the application of the differences method and the regression method on previous and subsequent NDVI values in the course of the fire. Secondly, the level of damage caused by the fires was estimated.
