Although un-manned aircraft have been around for many years, they are now becoming available for scientific and civil use, as low-altitude systems that provide an "eye in the sky" for small photogrammetry projects (the size of a construction site), and for the development of new remote sensing applications. First, the concept of an UAS is described. It is not just about the aircraft, but also about its ground control system (which gives the remote pilot the ability to control the aircraft). Two ways of classification are given, one more descriptive (based on physical properties such as total mass, range, endurance, etc.), and one based on the flight clearance potential. The latter is important, since there is a total lack of coherent regulations across Europe. A summary of the regulatory authorities is presented in chapter 2. The report concludes with a review of the (potential) applications in remote sensing that can be conducted with UAS.
