[Termes IGN] recensement démographiqueRésumé : (auteur) This study reunites areal interpolation with the isopleth mapping process to construct an inferred larger scale isopleth map. Intelligent areal interpolation is used to construct two types of population density surfaces that are used as inputs for pycnophylactic interpolation of an isopleth surface. One is a target zone population density surface (TZPDS) and the other is a control zone population density surface (CZPDS). Results suggest that an inferred isopleth map with remote sensing control data is a better surface depiction than an isopleth map without any control data, and the quality of such an isopleth map is further improved by enhancing the remote sensing data with residential parcel information. A CZPDS-derived intelligent isopleth map also has more peaks and variations in population distribution patterns than does a TZPDS-derived one due to the larger scale of the control data. The study shows that the transect-from-baseline technique is complicated by choice of a proper baseline as well as generating transects that intersect with each other rather than with the nearest shoreline. The change polygon method captures the full spatial difference between the positions of the two shorelines and average coastal change is the defined as the ratio of the net area divided by the shoreline length. Although then change polygon method is sensitive to the definition and measurement of shoreline length, the results are more invariant to parameter changes than the transect-from-baseline method, suggesting that the change polygon technique may be a more robust coastal change method. The neural network method presented adopts the approach taken by intelligent interpolation methods where ancillary spatial information is presented to assist in achieving more accurate results. For this study, the data to be estimated are total populations for census tracts and block groups in Hartford County, Connecticut. A number of neural network models are generated containing various combinations of ancillary spatial information. The neural-network-derived predictions are compared with the predicted populations derived from three existing interpolation methods: areal weighting, a dasymetric areal weighting approach using remote sensing data, and ordinary least squares (OLS) regression. For each scenario presented, the proposed neural network approach outperforms each of the existing methods. Either a finite number of scale-dependent representations of cartographic lines can be explicitly stored, or a scale-independent database is generated from which subsequent scale representations can be extracted as needed. These two strategies parallel differences in hierarchical and non-hierarchical line simplification operators. Non-hierarchical line simplification can produce the most geometrically accurate simplification at any scale, while hierarchical operators are often associated with scale-independent databases. In this research, hierarchical and non-hierarchical line simplification operators are evaluated by comparing both the points retained by these different algorithms and the overall quality of the graphic portrayal for sample lines of different complexity and at different scales. Visual inspection of the results did not reveal any discernable difference at any scale for any line. Subsequent numerical analyses shows some differences but overall little geometric quality is lost by using a hierarchical operator as opposed to a non-hierarchical one and given the greater flexibility of scale representations that is possible, hierarchical methods appear to be more satisfactory.
