[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Key message : Recent growth changes (1980–2007) in Western European forests strongly vary across tree species, and range from +42% in mountain contexts to −17% in Mediterranean contexts. These changes reveal recent climate warming footprint and are structured by species' temperature (−) and precipitation (+) growing conditions.
Context : Unprecedented climate warming impacts forests extensively, questioning the respective roles of climatic habitats and tree species in forest growth responses. National forest inventories ensure a repeated and spatially systematic monitoring of forests and form a unique contributing data source.
Aims : A primary aim of this paper was to estimate recent growth changes in eight major European tree species, in natural contexts ranging from mountain to Mediterranean. A second aim was to explore their association with species’ climatic habitat and contemporary climate change.
Methods : Using >315,000 tree increments measured in >25,000 NFI plots, temporal changes in stand basal area increment (BAI) were modelled. Indicators of climate normals and of recent climatic change were correlated to species BAI changes.
Results : BAI changes spanned from −17 to +42% over 1980–2007 across species. BAI strongly increased for mountain species, showed moderate/no increase for generalist and temperate lowland species and declined for Mediterranean species. BAI changes were greater in colder/wetter contexts than in warmer/drier ones where declines were observed. This suggested a role for climate warming, further found more intense in colder contexts and strongly correlated with species BAI changes.
Conclusion : The predominant role of climate warming and species climatic habitat in recent growth changes is highlighted in Western Europe. Concern is raised for Mediterranean species, showing growth decreases in a warmer climate with stable precipitation.Numéro de notice : A2017-279 Affiliation des auteurs : LIF+Ext (2012-2019) Thématique : FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1007/s13595-017-0626-1 Date de publication en ligne : 14/04/2017 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1007/s13595-017-0626-1 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=85312

[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) While forest growth changes have been observed in many places worldwide, their spatial variation and environmental origin remain poorly documented. Analysis of these historical changes in contrasted regional contexts, and their mapping over continuous environmental gradients, may help uncover their environmental causes. The approach was tested on Norway spruce (Picea abies) in three western European mountain contexts (Massif Central, Alps and Jura), using National Forest Inventory (NFI) data. We explored the environmental factors influencing stand basal area increment (BAI) in each context. We then estimated and compared mean regional changes in BAI and related these to the regional environmental limitations evidenced. Within each region, we further mapped local BAI trends using a geographically weighted regression (GWR) approach. In each region, local estimates of BAI changes were finally correlated to environmental indicators. We found an increase in BAI in the three regions over 1980–2005, greater in the Massif Central (+71 %) than in the Alps (+19 %) and the Jura Mountains (+21 %). Inter-regional differences in BAI changes suggested the release of a thermal constraint—found more important in the Massif Central—by the strong temperature increase over the period, and a limitation by water availability in the Jura and the Alps Mountains. Spatial patterns of BAI change revealed significant local variations in the Massif Central and the Alps. From the correlation analysis, these were again found consistent with the hypothesis of an enhancing effect of climate warming in these mountain ranges. They were also related to local soil nutritional status in the two regions, and negatively related to nitrogen deposition level in the Massif Central. As a main outcome, a strong context and spatial scale dependence of productivity changes is emphasized. In addition, the enhancing effect of climate warming on productivity is suggested, with local modulation by climatic and nutritional conditions. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Introduction : In pure and even-aged stands, the allometry between mean tree size and maximum stand density—or self-thinning relationship—has long been considered a constant among tree species. Although the self-thinning allometric coefficient has been shown to be species-dependent, estimates available for a given species also differ. Whether this coefficient truly varies across species thus remains an open issue. A potential cause of variation in the coefficient may lie in a departure from the allometric assumption in the self-thinning relationship.
Methods : We analysed the species dependence of the self-thinning relationship for 11 temperate and Mediterranean tree species growing in pure and even-aged stands in France based on the French National Forest Inventory (NFI) data. Self-thinning relationships were fitted using a ‘stochastic frontier’ technique. Pairwise comparison tests of the self-thinning allometric coefficients were implemented. We also investigated the allometric nature of the relationship by testing a linear and a curvilinear model of log density against the log quadratic mean diameter.
Results : Self-thinning relationships were clearly evidenced from the NFI data and displayed significant differences between species. The curvilinear model was significantly more accurate for 7 out of 11 species and depicted a concave relationship, suggesting a decrease in self-tolerance over ontogeny.
Conclusion : As a major finding, the self-thinning relationship significantly varies across species. We emphasise the need to consider a high number of species to show such specific variations in the self-thinning relationship. Another important outcome is that the self-tolerance depends on the developmental stage.Numéro de notice : A2012-758 Affiliation des auteurs : IFN+Ext (1958-2011) Thématique : FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1007/s13595-011-0149-0 Date de publication en ligne : 11/11/2011 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1007/s13595-011-0149-0 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=98388

[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Changes in forest growth have been found in European forests and worldwide. However most observations have been derived from samples of restricted size, whose representativeness at a regional forest scale is questionable. National forest inventories provide an interesting perspective for both regional scale assessment of these trends and the investigation of their variations over environmental gradients, but have been little used.
The aim of our work was to carry out an exploratory modelling analysis of productivity changes, based on the French national forest inventory data. The objectives were: (i) to assess recent trends in forest productivity and to investigate a possible recent decline as found in previous studies; and (ii) to investigate trend variations relative to site fertility factors. We focused on pure and even-aged stands of common beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) in north-eastern France, already documented from previous studies based on retrospective data.
The dataset consisted of 925 temporary plots inventoried between 1979 and 2007. We developed two regression models of stand basal area increment (BAI) against stand developmental stage (dominant height), site fertility (site index in the SI model, environmental indicators in the EI model) and stand density (relative density index). The effect of calendar date was tested in order to investigate possible historical trends. Site fertility–date interactions were also tested to investigate the site-dependence of trends.
The fitted models showed a high goodness of fit (adj. R2 over 0.69). We showed an increase in stand BAI of 27.8% between 1977 and 1987, (10.4% between 1979 and 1987). Stand BAI then decreased by approximately 5% between 1987 and 2004. We thus confirmed the hypothesis of a recent decline in common beech vitality in its temperate range. The chronologies clearly depicted the effect of severe drought events (1976 and 2003), pointing out the predominant role of water availability in the changes observed. No significant site-dependence of the trend was identified.Numéro de notice : A2010-648 Affiliation des auteurs : IFN+Ext (1958-2011) Thématique : FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1016/j.foreco.2010.06.005 Date de publication en ligne : 07/07/2010 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.foreco.2010.06.005 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=90993
