[Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (auteur) In temperate forests, autumn leaf phenology signals the end of leaf growing season and shows large variability across tree-crowns, which importantly mediates photosynthetic seasonality, hydrological regulation, and nutrient cycling of forest ecosystems. However, critical challenges remain with the monitoring of autumn leaf phenology at the tree-crown scale due to the lack of spatially explicit information for individual tree-crowns and high (spatial and temporal) resolution observations with nadir view. Recent availability of the PlanetScope constellation with a 3 m spatial resolution and near-daily nadir view coverage might help address these observational challenges, but remains underexplored. Here we developed an integration of PlanetScope with drone observations for improved monitoring of crown-scale autumn leaf phenology in a temperate forest in Northeast China. This integration includes: 1) visual identification of individual tree-crowns (and species) from drone observations; 2) extraction of time series of PlanetScope vegetation indices (VIs) for each identified tree-crown; 3) derivation of three metrics of autumn leaf phenology from the extracted VI time series, including the start of fall (SOF), middle of fall (MOF), and end of fall (EOF); and 4) accuracy assessments of the PlanetScope-derived phenology metrics with reference from local phenocams. Our results show that (1) the PlanetScope-drone integration captures large inter-crown phenological variations, with a range of 28 days, 25 days, and 30 days for SOF, MOF, and EOF, respectively, (2) the extracted crown-level phenology metrics strongly agree with those derived from local phenocams, with a root-mean-square-error (RMSE) of 4.1 days, 3.0 days and 5.4 days for SOF, MOF, and EOF, respectively, and (3) PlanetScope maps large variations in autumn leaf phenology over the entire forest landscape with spatially explicit information. These results demonstrate the ability of our proposed method in monitoring the large spatial heterogeneity of crown-scale autumn leaf phenology in the temperate forest, suggesting the potential of using high-resolution satellites to advance crown-scale phenology studies over large geographical areas. [Termes IGN] trafic routierRésumé : (Auteur) Public vehicles and personal navigation assistants have become increasingly equipped with single-frequency global positioning system (GPS) receivers or loggers. These commonly used terminals offer an inexpensive way for acquiring large volumes of GPS traces, which contain information pertaining to road position and traffic rules. Using this new type of spatial data resource, we propose a novel approach for generating high-quality routable road maps. In this approach, a simplified road network graph model uses circular boundaries to separate all GPS traces into road intersections and road segments and builds road networks that maintain their identical geometric topologies through the entry/exit points at the original boundaries. One difficulty inherent to this type of approach is how to best determine the appropriate spatial coverage for road intersections. Conflict points among GPS traces that have large intersection angles usually occur within the physical areas of road intersections, particularly those involving left turns. Therefore, we determined a proper circle boundary for individual road intersections by conducting a spatial analysis of such feature points. This approach was implemented using Python and PostgreSQL/PostGIS and was tested in Huaibei City, China. Based on a comparison with human-interpreted results, the automatically generated routable road map was demonstrated to be of high quality and displayed detailed road networks with turning at various at-grade intersections, interchanges and U-turns. Image exploitation approaches during the immediate (first few days) aftermath of a disaster are predominantly through visual analysis rather than automated classification methods. While the temporal needs for obtaining the imagery are fairly clear (within a one- to three-day window), there have only been educated guesses about the spatial resolution requirements necessary for the imagery for visual analysis. In this paper, we report results from an empirical study to identify the coarsest spatial resolution that is adequate for tasks required immediately following a major disaster. The study was conducted using cognitive science experimental methods and evaluated the performance of individuals with varying image interpretation skills in the task of mapping hurricane-related residential structural damage. Through this study, we found 1.5 m as a threshold for the coarsest spatial resolution imagery that can successfully be used for this task. The results of the study are discussed in terms of the likelihood of collection of this type of imagery within the temporal window required for emergency management operations. However, it can be difficult to differentiate low-lying vegetation from tree cover using optical data alone. Combining a lidar-derived Normalized Digital Surface Model (ndsm) improves classification accuracy, but the optical imagery is often imperfectly aligned with the NDSM. Aerial imagery is normally orthorectified using the ground elevation. However, tall objects in the orthorectified imagery still suffer from relief displacement. This can cause classification errors when lidar and the aerial imagery are combined. This study presents an approach for urban tree cover mapping composed of two parts: a method for correcting the relief displacement of trees in previously orthorectified aerial imagery, and an object-based classification method which combines relief-corrected multispectral aerial imagery with a lidar-derived NDSM. Using these methods, the tree cover was mapped for a 1,600 ha region of London, Ontario, Canada with improved positional and classification accuracy. [Termes IGN] visualisation dynamiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The quality of dynamic map symbols plays an important role in the representation of spatial-temporal changes. This paper reports an investigation into the quality of dynamic symbols. To assess the quality of such symbols, a set of traffic flow data is used for the production of different kinds of dynamic maps, with focus on four variables, i.e. size, color, frame rate and display format. Two quantitative measures are used for analysis, i.e. deviation and response time. A set of traffic data is used for the production of dynamic maps for evaluation. The experimental results show that the size is more efficient and more effective than color for dynamic maps with the same frame rate and display format. The most efficient and effective color class number is 10 on the large format display such as 1024 * 768 pixels. And the most efficient and effective size class number is 15 on large format display such as 1024 * 768 pixels. The effective frame rate for dynamic map animation is smaller than that of the general animation on the Internet or Quick Time and AVI format video. The most efficient and most effective frame rate is 3 frames per second in the color expression and 6 frames per second in the size expression. In sum, the effective and efficient value of color, size and frame rate on large format display is less than the value on the small format display. These results suggest the frame rate should be reduced on the small format display. It is hoped that the results from this study will be of help in the design of effective and efficient dynamic map symbols for geographical information visualization.
