Satellite-based geodetic techniques which measure the Earth’s surface displacements can thus be used to track changing conditions in aquifer systems. However, accurately extracting groundwater-induced deformation signals still poses a challenge as geodetic techniques like GNSS and InSAR also record noise, systematic errors and other sources of deformation. In this study, we take advantage of the relatively dense in situ groundwater monitoring network of the Sacramento Valley aquifer in California to constrain its deformation and hydromechanical properties. We start by characterizing the main seasonal and multiannual fluctuations in groundwater levels with an Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and exploit the resulting temporal signature to extract the associated deformation field from GNSS and InSAR time series. We then develop a poroelastic model of the aquifer to invert for its elastic storage capacity and estimate the respective contributions of elastic and inelastic processes to long-term subsidence. Our modeling also suggests that depth-dependent elastic properties are necessary to explain the spatial distribution of horizontal poroelastic displacements measured by GNSS. This work has important implications for the sustainable management of heavily-stressed Californian aquifers but also serves as a calibration between in situ and remote sensing techniques, which is essential for the successful deployment of satellite-based groundwater monitoring in areas with sparse field-based instrumentation. [Vedettes matières IGN] Traitement de données GNSSRésumé : (Auteur) The second reprocessing of all GPS data gathered by the Analysis Centers of IGS was conducted in late 2013 using the latest models and methodologies. Improved models of antenna phase center variations and solar radiation pressure in JPL’s reanalysis are expected to significantly reduce errors. In an earlier work, JPL estimates of position time series, termed first reprocessing campaign, were examined in terms of their spatial and temporal correlation, power spectra, and draconitic signal. Similar analyses are applied to GPS time series at 89 and 66 sites of the second reanalysis with the time span of 7 and 21 years, respectively, to study possible improvements. Our results indicate that the spatial correlations are reduced on average by a factor of 1.25. While the white and flicker noise amplitudes for all components are reduced by 29–56 %, the random walk amplitude is enlarged. The white, flicker, and random walk noise amount to rate errors of, respectively, 0.01, 0.12, and 0.09 mm/yr in the horizontal and 0.04, 0.41 and 0.3 mm/yr in the vertical. Signals reported previously, such as those with periods of 13.63, 14.76, 5.5, and 351.4 / n for n=1,2,…,8 days, are identified in multivariate spectra of both data sets. The oscillation of the draconitic signal is reduced by factors of 1.87, 1.87, and 1.68 in the east, north and up components, respectively. Two other signals with Chandlerian period and a period of 380 days can also be detected. [Termes IGN] station de poursuiteRésumé : (auteur) While accuracy of tracking station coordinates is of key importance for Precise Orbit Determination (POD) for altimeter satellites, reliability and operationality are also of great concern. In particular, while recent ITRF realizations should be the most accurate at the time of their computation, they cannot be directly used by the POD groups for operational consideration for several reasons such as new stations appearing in the network or new discontinuities affecting station coordinates. For POD purposes, we computed a new DORIS terrestrial frame called DPOD2008 derived from ITRF2008 (as previously done by DPOD2005 with regards to ITRF2005). In a first step, we will present the method used to validate the past ITRF2008 using more recent DORIS data and to derive new station positions and velocities, when needed. In particular, discontinuities in DORIS station positions and/or velocities are discussed. To derive new DORIS station coordinates, we used recent DORIS weekly time series of coordinates, recent GPS relevant time series at co-located sites and also dedicated GPS campaigns performed by IGN when installing new DORIS beacons. DPOD2008 also contains additional metadata that are useful when processing DORIS data, for example, periods during which DORIS data should not be used or at least for which data should be downweighted. In several cases, a physical explanation can be found for such temporary antenna instability. We then demonstrate improvements seen when using different reference frames, such as the original ITRF2008 solution, for precise orbit determination of altimeter satellites TOPEX/Poseidon and Jason-2 over selected periods spanning 1993–2013. [Termes IGN] International Terrestrial Reference FrameRésumé : (auteur) Ideally, the origin of the Terrestrial Reference Frame (TRF) is defined as the center of mass of the whole Earth system, the time evolution of its orientation is such that no global net rotation of the whole Earth’s surface is possible and the TRF scale is specified through the adoption of some physical constants and time-scale. These parameters need to be accurately determined since their choice has an influence on many Earth’s science applications. The aim of the task force “External evaluation of the Terrestrial Reference Frame” is to review all the applications for which the TRF accuracy is of fundamental importance. As the TRF choice has an influence on the interpretation of the results in these specific applications, we investigate if some evaluation procedures could be established. We classified the methods that allow evaluation of the TRF using ground, geodetic data or models that have not been used in the TRF construction, based on their expected contributions. Some of these methods have been applied to the latest International Terrestrial Reference System realizations and the results are presented here. Although further analysis will be necessary to deliver a more precise error budget, our findings demonstrate that the most recent realizations of the ITRS are more accurate than the previous in terms of origin and scale rate definition. The current level of ITRF2008 accuracy is likely to be at the level of 0.5 mm/year along each origin component and better than 0.3 mm/year in the scale rate according to the most recent studies. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (auteur) Due to its specific geographical location as well as its geodetic equipment (DORIS, GNSS, microwave transponder and tide gauges), the Gavdos station in Crete, Greece is one of the very few sites around the world used for satellite altimetry calibration. To investigate the quality of the Gavdos geodetic coordinates and velocities, we analyzed and compared here DORIS and GPS-derived results obtained during several years of observations. The DORIS solution is the latest ignwd11 solution at IGN, expressed in ITRF2008, while the GPS solution was obtained using the GAMIT software package. Current results show that 1–2 mm/yr agreement can be obtained for 3-D velocity, showing a good agreement with current geophysical models. In particular, the agreement obtained for the vertical velocity is around 0.3–0.4 mm/yr, depending on the terrestrial reference frame. As a by-product of these geodetic GPS and DORIS results, Zenith Tropospheric Delays (ZTDs) estimations were also compared in 2010 between these two techniques, and compared to ECMWF values, showing a 6.6 mm agreement in dispersion without any significant difference between GPS and DORIS (with a 97.6% correlation), but with a 13–14 mm agreement in dispersion when comparing to ECMWF model (with only about 90% correlation for both techniques). These tropospheric delay estimations could also provide an external calibration of the tropospheric correction used for the geophysical data of satellite altimetry missions.
