[Termes IGN] ville intelligenteRésumé : (auteur) The growing ubiquity of location/activity sensing technologies and location-based services (LBS) has led to a large volume and variety of location-based big data (LocBigData), such as location tracking or sensing data, social media data, and crowdsourced geographic information. The increasing availability of such LocBigData has created unprecedented opportunities for research on urban systems and human environments in general. In this article, we first review the common types of LocBigData: mobile phone network data, GPS data, Location-based social media data, LBS usage/log data, smart card travel data, beacon log data (WiFi or Bluetooth), and camera imagery data. Secondly, we describe the opportunities fueled by LocBigData for the realization of smart cities, mainly via answering questions ranging from “what happened” and “why did it happen” to “what's likely to happen in the future” and “what to do next”. Thirdly, pitfalls of dealing with LocBigData are summarized, such as high volume/velocity/variety; non-random sampling; messy and not clean data; and correlations rather than causal relationships. Finally, we review the state-of-the-art research trends in this field, and conclude the article with a list of open research challenges and a research agenda for LocBigData research to help achieve the vision of smart and sustainable cities. [Termes IGN] transport urbainRésumé : (auteur) Taxi trajectories from urban environments allow inferring various information about the transport service qualities and commuter dynamics. It is possible to associate starting and end points of taxi trips with requirements of individual groups of people and even social inequalities. Previous research shows that due to service restrictions, boro taxis have typical customer destination locations on selected Saturdays: many drop-off clusters appear near the restricted zone, where it is not allowed to pick up customers and only few drop-off clusters appear at complicated crossing. Detected crossings imply recent infrastructural modifications. We want to follow up on these results and add one additional group of commuters: Citi Bike users. For selected Saturdays in June 2015, we want to compare the destinations of boro taxi and Citi Bike users. This is challenging due to manifold differences between active mobility and motorized road users, and, due to the fact that station-based bike sharing services are restricted to stations. Start and end points of trips, as well as the volumes in between rely on specific numbers of bike sharing stations. Therefore, we introduce a novel spatiotemporal assigning procedure for areas of influence around static bike sharing stations for extending available computational methods. [Termes IGN] temps réelRésumé : (Auteur) Personalized navigation and way-finding are prominent research areas of location-based service (LBSs). This includes innovative concepts for car navigation. Within this paper, we investigate the idea of providing drivers a routing suggestion which avoids ‘complicated crossings’ in urban areas. Inexperienced drivers include persons who have a driver’s license but, for whatever reason, feel uncomfortable to drive in a city environment. Situations where the inexperienced driver has to depend on a navigation device and reach a destination in an unfamiliar territory may be difficult. Preferences of inexperienced drivers are investigated. ‘Fears’ include driving into ‘complicated crossings’. Therefore, the definition and spatial characteristics of ‘complicated crossings’ are investigated. We use OpenStreetMap as a road dataset for the routing network. Based on the topological characteristics of the dataset, measured by the number of nodes, we identify crossings that are ‘complicated’. The user can choose to compute an alternative route that avoids these complicated crossings. This methodology is one step in building a full ‘inexperienced drivers’ routing system, which includes additional preferences from the user group, for example, as avoiding left turns where no traffic light is present. For efficient planning and management of complex systems composed of various components, understanding relationships between an event and the reactive behaviour of involved components is vital. Analysing these complex relations demands a spatiotemporal event-based model, in which the event plays a central role. In this article we develop a framework which provides the possibility of mapping and storing event-related information on the OpenStreetMap (OSM) platform by volunteers. The study is divided into two different phases: first, mapping the event elements by adding new attributes adequately designed to encode spatiotemporal and semantic event information; and, second, representing the event-related information on a map by developing a Web application, offering a volunteered location-based service. To facilitate the event-mapping procedure, a Java OpenStreetMap (JOSM) plug-in was developed for volunteers. The plug-in was developed based on the notion of an event to adequately store and manipulate the semantic information of events in the OSM structure. The tool was used by more than 100 volunteers in Munich for the years 2012 to 2014. In addition to manual collection of event-related information by volunteers, a crawling framework was also developed to automatically collect freely available event information from various Web pages on the Internet. The framework extracts the same event elements as the plug-in. But the framework crawls each Web page according to some pre-defined rules and follows a post-processing step, if necessary. The manually collected events along with the crawled event information are visualized in a Web application. The study revealed that adding the possibility of event-oriented mapping to OSM empowers volunteers to collect a higher level of information (event information) for city maps. This information can furthermore be used for strategy development and service planning by decision-makers. In some cases, photos are precisely mapped as texture onto the geometric model, which then renders a realistic impression of the underlying environment. In other cases, the models are visualized in a more abstract way. This paper is dedicated to investigating the relation of level of abstraction, information density and storage capacity for the representation of a 3D city model. Increasing the level of abstraction usually leads to the decrease of information density to be processed. Accordingly, the general storage capacity will decrease as well. Since a higher level of abstraction is less bound to photorealistic aspects, it may allow further semantic information to be accommodated in the visualisation process. If the level of abstraction in a city model increases in a well-controlled way so that the characteristic features are enhanced while non-relevant information is inhibited, the user’s cognitive load during task completion may be reduced. This implies an increased efficiency of information communication. Using image segmentation algorithms, the elements within a facade per unit of area are successively reduced while preserving the characteristic structures within the image. The segmented image holds the sufficient information to be recognized in the environment. We treat the three concepts, level of abstraction, information density and storage capacity, as fundamental variables for the visualisation of building facades. To deal with these concepts, we organizing them on a continuum, which enables us to find a tradeoff between a potential loss of information and the level of usage for various tasks.
