[Termes IGN] visualisation de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) This paper explains a ray tracing method which is applied to prediction and visualization of diffracted and reflected GPS signals in dense urban areas. Reflected and diffracted signals can have a detrimental effect on GPS positioning accuracy especially in highly built-up areas. The ray tracing technique implemented in this paper is specially geared to LiDAR height pole data at 1-m spatial resolution and 2D building footprints in raster and vector format, respectively. Such a simple data format allows for rapid implementation of 3D ray tracing in a GIS without further processing so that detailed 3D urban models in vector format are not required. Issues of spatial uncertainty in the data used are also addressed in relation to the identification of multipath signals. Some preliminary results obtained from fieldwork are presented and analysed in detail. [Termes IGN] visibilitéRésumé : (Auteur) This paper describes an automated method for predicting the number of satellites visible to a GPS receiver, at any point on the Earth's surface at any time. Intervisibility analysis between a GPS receiver and each potentially visible GPS satellite is performed using a number of different surface models and satellite orbit calculations. The developed software can work with various ephemeris data, and will compute satellite visibility in real time. Real-time satellite availability prediction is very useful for mobile applications such as in-car navigation systems, personal navigations systems and LBS. The implementation of the method is described and the results are reported. [Termes IGN] WebSIGRésumé : (éditeur) These proceedings contain the papers selected for presentation at the Seventh International Symposium on Web and Wireless Geographical Information Systems (W2GIS 2007). The symposium was organized locally by the University of Glamorgan (UK) and held in Cardiff (UK) in November 2007. It was the latest in a series of annual events that started in Kyoto 2001 and now alternate locations each year between East Asia and Europe. As in previous years, the aim of the symposium was to provide an up-to-date review of advances and recent developments in theoretical and technical issues relating to Web and wireless GIS technologies. The symposium organizers received 45 full papers in response to the call for papers. These papers went through a thorough review process, with each paper being assessed by at least three reviewers. The quality of papers was high, and 21 were selected for presentation and inclusion in these proceedings. It was particularly pleasing to note that 19 different countries are represented by the authors of selected papers. The keynote address was delivered by Jonathan Raper of City University, London, in which he talked about his research work in the areas of location-based services and mobile information needs. We wish to thank all the authors that submitted papers to this symposium. Our special thanks go to all those who attended, and particularly those who presented. [Termes IGN] véhicule automobileRésumé : (Auteur) A novel method of map matching using the Global Positioning System (GPS) has been developed which uses digital mapping and height data to augment point position computation. This method reduces the error in position, which is a sum from several sources, including signal delay due to the ionosphere and atmosphere and until recently from 'selective availability' (S/A). S/A was imposed by the US military to degrade purposefully the accuracy of GPS, but was switched off on 2 May 2000, and is to be replaced with 'regional denial capabilities in lieu of global degradation' (Interagency GPS Executive Board, 2000). Taylor et al. (2001) describe the Road Reduction Filter (RRF) in detail. RRF is a method of detecting the correct road on which a vehicle is travelling. In the work described here, the position error vector is estimated in a formal least squares procedure, as the vehicle is moving. This estimate is a map-matched correction, that provides an autonomous alternative to DGPS for in-car navigation and fleet management. In this paper, a formula is derived for 'Mapped Dilution of Precision' (MDOP), defined as the theoretical ratio of position precision using map-matched corrections to that using perfect Differential GPS (DGPS) correction. This is shown to be purely a function of route geometry, and is computed for examples of basic road shapes. MDOP is favourable unless the route has less than a few degrees curvature for several kilometres. MDOP can thus provide an objective estimate of positioning precision to a vehicle driver. Precision estimates using MDOP are shown to agree well with 'true' positioning errors determined using high precision (cm) GPS carrier phase techniques. The exact location of a vehicle on a road is essential for accurate surveying applications. These include close range photogrammetry using digital video or still cameras and the verification of digital mapping by measured (GPS and other sensors) trajectories.
