The article discusses the various codes that underlie map communication. Denotative codes couple marks and meanings directly; connotative ones do so through intermediate meanings. General codes comprise the common conventions of cartographic representation, whereas special ones involve specific knowledge of the phenomena mapped. The general denotative code governs the transcription of the basic topical and locational information, the latter comprising the absolute location and the dimensional characteristics of each feature represented. In addition, groundplan properties of line and area symbols may convey topical information by virtue of the special denotative code. Problem-oriented map interpretation is based on special connotative codes, which vary among map users concerned with different aspects of reality. The general connotative code, finally, underlies interpolation, the expression of relative location, and the substitution of locational data.
