[Termes IGN] végétationRésumé : (Auteur) Hyperspectral features in the red-edge region were tested as an index of plant stress responses to soil -oxygen depletion. The aim was to provide the basis for a warning system to identify natural gas leakage by the spectral responses of plants growing in the affected soil.
Elevated concentrations of natural gas in the soil atmosphere were used to deplete oxygen concentrations around the roots of grass, wheat (Hordeum vulgare cv Claire) and bean (Vicia faba cv Clipper) growing in a field facility. Visible symptoms due to the natural gas included reduced growth of the plants and chlorosis of the leaves.
Spectral responses included increased reflectance in the visible wavelengths and decreased reflectance in the near infra-red. Derivative analysis identified features within the red-edge at 720-730 and 702 nm. Ratios of the magnitude of the derivative at 725 to that at 702 nm were less in areas where gas was present. This ratio enabled identification of stress due to gas leakage up to 7 days before visible symptoms were observed and also at the edges of gassed plots where visible symptoms were not expressed. The technique was able to identify stress responses to long-term leaks in all the crops tested but to short-term leaks only in grass. [Termes IGN] simulation d'étalonnageRésumé : (Auteur) Spectroradiometric measurements were made over a range of crop canopy densities, soil backgrounds and foliage colour. The reflected spectral radiances were convoluted with the spectral response functions of a range of satellite instruments to simulate their responses. When Normalised Difference Vegetation Indices (NDVI) from the different instruments were compared, they varied by a few percent, but the values were strongly linearly related, allowing vegetation indices from one instrument to be intercalibrated against another. A table of conversion coefficents is presented for AVHRR, ATSR2, Landsat MSS, TM and ETM+, SPOT-2 and SPOT-4 HRV, IRS, IKONOS, SEAWIFS, MISR, MODIS, POLDER, Quickbird and MERIS (see Appendix A for glossary of acronyms). The same set of coefficients was found to apply, within the margin of error of the analysis, for the Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index SAVI. The relationships for SPOT vs. TM and for ATSR-2 vs. AVHRR were directly validated by comparison of atmospherically corrected image data. The results indicate that vegetation indices can be interconverted to a precision of 12%. This result offers improved opportunities for monitoring crops through the growing season and the prospects of better continuity of long-term monitoring of vegetation responses to environmental change. Meanwhile, there are few amongst those who apply remote sensing techniques in their particular branches of science and consulting equipped to research the worrying implications of such distortions. The convening of this workshop focussing on the subject was particularly welcome therefore, as it enabled the small but very important group of concerned specialists in the United Kingdom to come together to discuss their problems and explain how they have approached them. The sessions also allowed time for participants to show how they had derived correction factors which they have found useful and the papers published here reflect the type of work being undertaken in the fields of land, oceanographic and atmospheric applications. By far the most important feature of the meeting, however, was the opportunity which it provided for members of the remote sensing community concerned with applications to have their ideas reviewed by scientists engaged in research and development with a view to the development of new sensors.
