Also known as Community GIS, PGIS has some features of a belief system but is also seen as a set of methodological approaches, a planning process or just a tool. Nonetheless, PGIS is alive and kicking, with numerous applications all over the globe. Vigorous early examples came from Native American First Nations groups claiming customary lands and mapping traditional management practices. PGIS has been used in natural resource management, for forest land and products, traditional wildlife and fisheries management, wetland and agro-pastoralist land-use systems, for environmental protection and hazard mapping. Urban communities have employed it to improve their neighbourhoods and reclaim streets and parks. The author approaches GISfrom a refreshingly different angle.
