[Termes IGN] zone d'intérêtRésumé : (auteur) During the last two decades, UAV emerged as standard platform for photogrammetric data collection. Main motivation in that early phase was the cost effective airborne image collection at areas of limited size. This was already feasible by rather simple payloads like an off-the-shelf, compact camera and a navigation-grade GNSS sensor. Meanwhile, dedicated sensor systems enable applications that have not been feasible in the past. One example is the airborne collection of dense 3D point clouds at millimetre accuracies, which will be discussed in our paper. For this purpose, we collect both LiDAR and image data from a joint UAV platform and apply a so-called hybrid georeferencing. This process integrates photogrammetric bundle block adjustment with direct georeferencing of LiDAR point clouds. By these means georeferencing accuracy is improved for the LiDAR point cloud by an order of magnitude. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach in the context of a project, which aims on monitoring of subsidence of about 10 mm/year. The respective area of interest is defined by a ship lock and its vicinity of mixed use. In that area, multiple UAV flights were captured and evaluated for a period of three years. As our main contribution, we demonstrate that 3D point accuracies at sub-centimetre level can be achieved. This is realized by joint orientation of laser scans and images in a hybrid adjustment framework, which enables accuracies corresponding to the GSD of the captured imagery. [Termes IGN] SwisstopoRésumé : (auteur) Following the latest developments in Remotely Piloted Airborne Systems (RPAS) industry and attending some of the most prominent fairs related to the field of geomatics one easily recognizes that it is RPAS, which is strongly pushed into the civilian market. It really is of interest, if official authorities like National Mapping Agencies (NMAs) are starting to implement the RPASs technology within their specific data acquisition processes – to establish alternatives to their traditional manned photogrammetric survey flights. The European Spatial Data Research organization (EuroSDR), representing European NMAs and research organizations of currently 17 European states, is following UAV developments since end of 2004, where an ongoing activity was created, to continuously update their members on the developments in this technology. As systems consolidated, new impetus was given to more deeply explore the potential RPAS for national mapping. Today first national mapping agencies have already used RPAS based data for first experiments in mapping. Several NMAs are discussing on the future role of this technology within their agencies. This report will try to give an overview on the current situation on the use of RPAS in European mapping agencies. Based on the input from some selected NMAs, their expectations on RPAS technology, the fields of use they foresee in their country specific surroundings and – exemplarily – first experiences with this type of technology will be presented. Even though the use of RPAS in NMAs is still new, substantial technical and operational benefits become obvious already. With that, the paper will try to give a state-of-the-art report on the current activities and overall acceptance of RPAS technology in European photogrammetric mapping. [Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (Auteur) Self-calibration plays a significant role in the automatic interior/exterior orientation of camera systems. This paper presents a new family of self-calibration additional parameters (aps) for digital airborne camera calibration. Photogrammetric self-calibration can (to a very large extent) be considered as a function approximation problem in mathematics. Based on the rigorous approximation theory, a new family of so-called Legendre self-calibration APs is developed from the orthogonal Legendre Polynomials. An approach is suggested to assess the full potential of in-situ camera calibration. The performance of Legendre aps is investigated in many field tests on the DMC, UltracamX, UltracamXp and DigiCAM camera systems. The external accuracy in the tests can reach 0.2 GSD and 0.4 GSD in horizontal and vertical dimensions, respectively. The posterior standard deviation estimation of image measurements is approx. 0.12 pixel or even less. The advantages of Legendre aps are illustrated over the conventional counterparts. From both the theoretical and practical views, Legendre aps are orthogonal, rigorous, flexible, and effective for calibrating frame-format airborne cameras. [Termes IGN] série de FourierRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a new family of rigorous and flexible mathematical self-calibration additional parameters (APs) for airborne camera calibration. Photogrammetric self-calibration can – to a very large extent – be considered as a function approximation problem in mathematics. It is shown, that algebraic polynomials are less desirable for designing self-calibration APs due to the highly correlated terms. Based on the mathematical approximation theory, we suggest that Fourier series be the optimal mathematical basis functions for self-calibration purpose. A whole family of so-called Fourier self-calibration APs is developed, whose solid theoretical foundations are the Laplace’s Equation and the Fourier Theorem. Fourier APs are orthogonal, rigorous, flexible, generic and efficient for calibrating the image distortion of frame-format airborne cameras. The high performance of Fourier APs is demonstrated in many practical tests on different camera systems, including the DMC, DMCII, UltracamX, UltracamXp and DigiCAM cameras. We illustrate the theoretical and practical advantages of the Fourier APs over the physical APs and the popular polynomial APs. The joint applications with physical models are promoted for specific applications as well. On account of the theoretical justifications and high practical performance, Fourier APs should be preferred for in situ airborne camera calibration. [Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (Auteur) Within this paper, results of a test on the evaluation of the most recent photogrammetric digital airborne camera systems are presented. This project was initiated by the German Society of Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Geoinformation (DGPF), based on data from 12 different digital sensor systems flown in a well-controlled test site. The main topics of the evaluation phase are the analysis of geometric accuracy and sensor calibration, the radiometric performance including on-site radiometric calibration and multi-spectral land classifications, the performance of photogrammetric Digital Surface Model (dsm) generation, and the potential of manual stereoplotting from digital images. Within this paper, only results obtained at the Institute of Photogrammetry (iff), Universitaet Stuttgart will be presented, comprehensively proving the high performance of digital camera systems and processing. The IFF served as the pilot center and additionally concentrated on the investigation of camera geometry and the image based generation of height data.
