Its main advantage is that it provides 3D information in a quick and direct fashion. This information can be useful in different áreas of scientific research, ranging from hydrological studies and flood risk, to estimating plant biomass or urban planning & development. However, the use of such data is often limited by lack of access to the raw data, lack of the necessary computer resources, or the lack of experience in the use of this data. The main problem in the analysis of LiDAR point clouds is the massive quantities of data, which offers challenges in both the handling and visualization.
The aim of this thesis has been to design, develop and release a web platform for the analysis and visualization of LiDAR point clouds on the Internet. Technologies choices were based on popularity and current update speed in order to maintain compatibility over the platform in the near future. Open source technologies were used for easy deployment across multiple operating systems and equipment.
This has resulted in a web platform that minimizes response times, allowing users quick queries and ease of usen. Visualization tools in 2D and 3D have been implemented, which allow the user to visualize the point cloud as an image created with height or intensity values, or as a tri-dimensional model which can be rotated in three axes to improve analysis.
The created platform looks out to foster interaction between experts from different areas of study, in the effort of promoting better use of the LiDAR data available.
