[Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) In the context of the personalization of map design, cartographic needs have been highlighted considering the handling of more artistic and expressive tools, in order to design stylized and expressive maps, in existing cartographic pipelines. Based on previous works on style formalization, an approach of the specification of the style of a map has been proposed and experimented for some use cases. A first step concerns the analysis of inspiration sources, in order to extract "what does make the style of the source"™, i.e. the salient visual characteristics to be automatically reproduced (textures, spatial arrangements, linear stylization, etc.). In order to mimic and generate those visual characteristics, existing and innovative rendering techniques have been implemented in our GIS engine, thus extending the capabilities to generate expressive renderings. Therefore, an extension of the existing cartographic pipeline has been proposed based on the following aspects: 1- extension of the symbolization specifications OGC SLD/SE in order to provide a formalism to specify new types of Symbolizers and their related rendering methods; 2- separate specification of each rendering method and its parametrization, as metadata. The main contribution has been described in (Christophe et al. 2016). We focus here on the extension of the cartographic pipeline (SLD++ and metadata) and the diversity of map design capabilities that have been experimented for many topographic styles: old cartographic styles (Cassini), artistic styles (watercolor, impressionism, Japanese print), hybrid topographic styles (ortho-imagery & vector data) and finally abstract and photo-realist styles for the geovisualization of costal area. The genericity and interoperability of the approach is promising and has already been tested for 3D visualization. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) Mountain maps were the result of hours of precise by-hand drawing reliefs, based on perceptive and carto-graphic rules. Now, we would like to experiment automated methods in order to generate those very expressive drawings and to make the terrain morphology perceptible. It would also be a way to be able to control possible car-tographic styles for mountain map design. A method of automated texture generation has been proposed and extend-ed for cartography in (Loi et al. 2013, Loi, 2015). Iterations between cartographers and researchers in GISciences and Computer graphics allow experimenting and specifying various data and rules in order to influence the texture generation for terrain perception. The method is very promising, in order to be used in existing expressive carto-graphic pipelines, and can be subtly controlled to generate various types of textures for other expressive cartographic styles. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) Cartographic design requires controllable methods and tools to produce maps that are adapted to users’ needs and preferences. The formalized rules and constraints for cartographic representation come mainly from the conceptual framework of graphic semiology. Most current Geographical Information Systems (GIS) rely on the Styled Layer Descriptor and Semiology Encoding (SLD/SE) specifications which provide an XML schema describing the styling rules to be applied on geographic data to draw a map. Although this formalism is relevant for most usages in cartography, it fails to describe complex cartographic and artistic styles. In order to overcome these limitations, we propose an extension of the existing SLD/SE specifications to manage extended map stylizations, by the means of controllable expressive methods. Inspired by artistic and cartographic sources (Cassini maps, mountain maps, artistic movements, etc.), we propose to integrate into our system three main expressive methods: linear stylization, patch-based region filling and vector texture generation. We demonstrate how our pipeline allows to personalize map rendering with expressive methods in several examples.
