Similarly to 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic caused global travel challenges and restrictions for the first half of 2021. Consequently, the physical Congress re-scheduled from June 2020 to July 2021 was again postponed to June 2022, still in Nice (France). Papers were already submitted and the ISPRS Council decided to carry out the review process and the publication of the proceedings of the papers submitted under the label “2021 Edition”. The authors of published papers had the opportunity to present their work during a Digital Event, this year scheduled the same week as the planned Congress (5–9 July 2021). [Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (Auteur) The primary contribution of this paper is an efficient match pair selection method for oblique unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images. First, high overlap degrees and spatial resolutions cause image and feature redundancies in vocabulary tree building and image indexing. To cope with this issue, an image selection strategy and a feature selection strategy are designed to decrease the total number of features. Second, by analysing the distribution of the similarity scores, an adaptive threshold selection method is implemented to determine the number of candidate match pairs for each query image, and it avoids the disadvantages of the fixed number and fixed proportion methods. Then, an algorithm, termed AVT-Expansion, is proposed for the match pair selection and simplification where the initial match pairs are first selected by using the adaptive vocabulary tree (AVT). To simplify the initial match pairs, the AVT method is integrated with our previous MST-Expansion algorithm, which is used to extract a match graph by analysing the image topological connection network. Finally, the proposed method is verified using three UAV datasets captured with different oblique multi-camera systems. Experimental results demonstrate that the efficiency of the vocabulary tree building is improved, with speed-up ratios ranging from 14 to 16, and that high image retrieval precision values are obtained for the three datasets. For match pair selection of oblique UAV images, the proposed method is an efficient solution. [Termes IGN] valeur aberranteRésumé : (Auteur) Image matching is a basic task in the field of photogrammetry and remote sensing. By using the advantages of the Delaunay triangulation, this paper proposes a novel image matching method. First, neighboring structures of randomly distributed feature points are formed with the assistance of the Delaunay triangulation and its corresponding graph, and the image planes are simultaneously divided into patches of near-regular triangles. Second, two constraints, a photometric constraint and a geometric constraint, are implemented based on the constructed neighboring structures, which incorporate the hierarchical elimination and left-right checking strategies to deliver the influences of outliers on the decision of inliers and ensure the high precision of the final matches. The former utilizes a line descriptor as a second-order photometric constraint, and the latter adopts the spatial angular order (SAO) to achieve a geometric constraint for the calculation of dissimilarity scores between correspondences. In addition, with the constraints between triangles of the refined Delaunay triangulation and its corresponding graph, a match expansion is designed to exploit as many inliers as possible. Finally, a reliable image matching algorithm is proposed by sequentially executing the three constraints for outlier elimination and match expansion. Under comprehensive analysis and comparison with five state-of-the-art algorithms, the performance of the proposed method is verified by using both rigid and non-rigid datasets. The experimental results demonstrate that the Delaunay triangulation is sufficient to construct neighboring structures for the implementation of local photometric and geometric constraints, and the proposed method can achieve good performance in terms of the precision, recall and number of inliers, and provide reliable matches for stereo image pairs with both rigid and non-rigid transformations. [Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (Auteur) The primary contribution of this paper is an efficient Structure from Motion (SfM) solution for oblique unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images. First, an algorithm, considering spatial relationship constraints between image footprints, is designed for match pair selection with the assistance of UAV flight control data and oblique camera mounting angles. Second, a topological connection network (TCN), represented by an undirected weighted graph, is constructed from initial match pairs, which encodes the overlap areas and intersection angles into edge weights. Then, an algorithm, termed MST-Expansion, is proposed to extract the match graph from the TCN, where the TCN is first simplified by a maximum spanning tree (MST). By further analysis of the local structure in the MST, expansion operations are performed on the vertices of the MST for match graph enhancement, which is achieved by introducing critical connections in the expansion directions. Finally, guided by the match graph, an efficient SfM is proposed. Under extensive analysis and comparison, its performance is verified by using three oblique UAV datasets captured with different multi-camera systems. Experimental results demonstrate that the efficiency of image matching is improved, with speedup ratios ranging from 19 to 35, and competitive orientation accuracy is achieved from both relative bundle adjustment (BA) without GCPs (Ground Control Points) and absolute BA with GCPs. At the same time, images in the three datasets are successfully oriented. For the orientation of oblique UAV images, the proposed method can be a more efficient solution.
